Arsene Wenger previously vowed to leave Arsenal with the platform to "deliver something exceptional" after he had left.
The former Gunners manager departed the Emirates at the end of 2017/18, ending a near 22-year reign in charge of the north London side.
Wenger won three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups, including the Double in 1998 and 2002; and masterminded Arsenal's record-breaking 49 game unbeaten league run.
But towards the end of his tenure, pressure grew from supporters after the Gunners failed to qualify for the Champions League twice in succession, and the decision was made to part company on a mutual basis.
Prior to that, Wenger had opened up on his plans after life at Arsenal, vowing to leave his future successors with the best possible chance of achieving glory.
"I want to leave the club in a strong and healthy position and that means with good players, with good youth behind and a strong financial position to go further up and develop more," Wenger told his former player Martin Keown in an interview for BBC.
"The guy that comes in after me will be in a very good position to deliver something exceptional.
"I believe that the biggest quality at a top, top club is to maintain consistency in the results and I hope that when I've left someday and come back to the Emirates to watch a game, I will be very happy to see a quality team."
Unai Emery was named as Wenger's replacement in May 2018, but the Spaniard was sacked in December 2019 after a poor run of results, with Mikel Arteta named as the new Arsenal head coach.
Arteta has since made a promising start to his managerial career, winning the FA Cup in his first season in charge and qualifying for the Europa League.
And as per Wenger's promise, the former Arsenal midfielder has reaped the rewards of a strong flow of academy players into the first team, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Joe Willock and Eddie Nketiah all establishing themselves as key members of the Gunners' squad.
The English trio all starred in Thursday's 4-1 Europa League win over Molde, with Willock getting on the scoresheet.
Despite the midfielder's man-of-the-match performance, David Luiz believes the England Under-21 international can still do more.
“He has to do better. I’m never impressed with him. He missed a goal when I assisted him.
"Joe is a fantastic kid, a fantastic boy, I’m always behind him to help. He can do better, and I’m not joking with this because he has the talent to be at the top level.
"He understands that every single day. It’s a pleasure to play with him, especially because he’s humble. When you’re humble, you can learn things, get better and improve.
"If not, you can’t understand. He has a great present and future.”
