Arsene Wenger identifies two key turning points in Liverpool's loss to Barcelona

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has identified where it went wrong for Liverpool at Barcelona and has honed in on two specific moments.

The Reds were 1-0 down at the break thanks to Luis Suarez's first-half goal but controlled the early part of the second period.

That was until Lionel Messi tapped in Barcelona's second after Suarez hit the bar, before Messi scored an outstanding free-kick to give the Spanish giants a 3-0 first-leg lead in the Champions League semi-finals.

But Wenger believes one of the turning points came on the hour mark before Messi's first goal when Barcelona brought Nelson Semedo on and switched Roberto into the midfield. Couple that with Messi's late contributions and Wenger has perfectly summed up what went wrong for the Reds.

"Barcelona suffered at the beginning of the second half until they scored the second goal. Then Liverpool collapsed," Wenger told beIN SPORTS.

"Two things happened in the game. When they (Barcelona) suffered, they made a good change. He (Ernesto Valverde) brought (Nelson) Semedo on and put Roberto in midfield.

Liverpool verdict - Lionel Messi leaves Champions League dream in tatters but another challenge awaits Jurgen Klopp

"Barcelona looked more stable defensively. The second part is what we have seen so many times in our lives. Mr Messi came in and said: 'Let me finish the job now.'

Liverpool fans all use one word to describe Champions League loss to Barcelona

"It is the typical feeling of playing Barcelona. You come out thinking like you have done well but they are better than you in the final third. Every pass is great from Messi and that makes the difference at the end of the day."
