Arsene Wenger has a stark warning for Arsenal and others about the future of European football

Arsene Wenger has warned that the future of European football is likely to be dominated by a small number of clubs.

The former Arsenal boss has been speaking about the future of football, among other things, at an FWA Live event alongside Gary Lineker, Paul Elliot, Les Ferdinand and Henry Winter.

And he says that football is not as unpredictable as it once was, citing Nottingham Forest as an example, as he fired a warning to several clubs across Europe, including the Gunners, who are now facing a third season in a row without Champions League football.

“I love that football is a team sport, but in modern society it has become more about individuals, and individual success, and less what makes a team a team," he said.

“The question we ask is can Nottingham Forest win the European Cup today? No. Why? Because what this financial power has brought is all the best players come in a very small number of clubs.

“And the unpredictability of a competition has gone down. We know that only ten clubs today can win the European Cup, and maybe not even ten, maybe five or six.

“Why? Because all the best players are together in the same clubs, and not spread anymore. That makes it less unpredictable, because the best players are concentrated."

Wenger also , and how much respect he has for them, while he also talked about the future of football and the changes that have occurred in recent years, from the increased finances in the sport to the number of foreign owners involved in English football now.

He said: "It is very difficult and it is not what we are used to; I spent that, now what do I get back in financial terms?

"It is more a question of rationality, but as well it is passion, ego, what will bring it back on publicity, and emotion. It has become more irrational."
