Arsene Wenger has called for football to show the way the rest of society should behave when it comes to combating racism.
Football has had its own, high-profile problems with racism but, following the death of George Floyd, the sport has become more unified on the matter in recent weeks.
Floyd, 46, died while being arrested on May 25 in Minneapolis and his death has sparked anti-racism protests in the US and now across the rest of the world.
Several football players and clubs have shown support to the Black Lives Matter movement as a result, with some clubs in Germany taking a knee before matches as a show of solidarity.
Chelsea’s squad and staff did the same before training last week too and former Arsenal manager Wenger, who now works for Fifa, believes football can lead the way for the whole of society in the fight against racism
“Football can show the way to the rest of society how we should behave,” Wenger told The Athletic.
“We speak a lot about racism now. Football is based on merit only — not on who you are, where you come from and how you look.
“That’s a good way to teach the world how we should behave. Sport, in general, is a great leader in that way.”
