Arsene Wenger delivers verdict on Oliver Giroud's treatment at Chelsea this season

Arsene Wenger believes Oliver Giroud has been hard done to at Chelsea this season.

The striker was handed his first start since November against Tottenham at the weekend, and marked his return to Frank Lampard’s side with a goal.

It had looked for large parts of January like the former Arsenal man would depart the club, but having stayed put he has now returned to the fold at Stamford Bridge and kept his place in his side’s starting line-up for their game against Bayern Munich.

And his former boss believes not only has the attacker been hard done to this season, but he can be a very important player in games for Lampard's team.

"Honestly, I feel he was hard done. He was behind Batshuayi. I find that quite surprising," the Frenchman told BeinSports.

"Because he is a guy who has quality and uses his body well.

"When you don't pass the ball on the ground you can put the ball in the air.

"As on the second ball you have a chance because no defender heads the ball out clearly with him.

"Sometimes behind him in training, and I am quite tall, I didn't see the ball. He is so strong and uses well his body

"I think at home, especially at home, he is a very important player."
