Arsene Wenger delivers verdict on Mikel Arteta joining Arsenal and Carlo Ancelotti to Everton

Arsene Wenger has provided his backing to whoever Arsenal decide to appoint as their new head coach.

The former Gunners boss was speaking after being asked on his opinion of Mikel Arteta's imminent arrival at the Emirates as Unai Emery's permanent replacement.

Arteta is expected to finalise his move to Arsenal once Manchester City have played their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Oxford on Wednesday night, a game which the Spaniard will be in the dug-out for.

And Wenger believes Arteta has all the tools to be a success in north London.

Guardiola believes there is a good argument for Arteta to Arsenal

"Look I am an Arsenal supporter, I said that in my last speech," he told Sky Sports.

"At the moment I support the manager in charge, and the manager in charge is [Freddie] Ljungberg. When Arteta will be in charge, I will support Arteta.

"He is intelligent, he has passion, he has knowledge, but Ljungberg [does] as well.

"I believe that Arteta has certainly a great future, he has certainly learned a lot in his first position as an assistant coach and after that as well he will have to deal with the fact that he has no experience at that level and he will have to get surrounded well.

"For the rest, of course Arsenal is going through a very difficult period so it’s better I don’t comment too much on that and I just suffer like every supporter."

Arteta could take charge of Arsenal for their trip to Everton on Saturday, but the Toffees could also have a new manager in place for the clash.

Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly close to being appointed as Marco Silva's successor at Goodison Park after agreeing a deal in principle.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss was sacked by Napoli last Tuesday and was quickly linked with a host of jobs including Arsenal.

But Wenger believes the appointment of the three-time Champions League winner would be a real coup for the Merseyside club.

"Well it was quite a surprise that he had to leave Napoli," Wenger said.

"Everton are looking for a manager as well. So overall he will be a tremendous catch for Everton."

Duncan Ferguson remains in charge on an interim basis at Everton after earning a win over Chelsea and a draw against Manchester United, and will be in the dugout for the Carabao Cup quarter-final with Leicester on Wednesday.
