Arsene Wenger delivers his Manchester City and Liverpool Premier League title verdict

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Manchester City can only hope of beating Liverpool to the Premier League title this season.

Jurgen Klopp's side hold an eight-point lead at the top of the table following the weekend's results.

James Milner's stoppage-time penalty ensured Liverpool of a 17-straight Premier League win, while Manchester City were rocked as Wolves came away with a 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium thanks to Adama Traore's brace.

Heading into the international break those results leave Pep Guardiola's side with a mountain to climb - with his team also ravaged by injuries - if they want to retain their crown for another year.

While there are still 30 games to go, and City won the league with a 14-match winning streak last season, the odds are now in favour for Liverpool to end their 30-year wait for a league title.

That's also the opinion of Wenger, who believes that the Reds are the strongest team in the Premier League at the moment and only City - not Arsenal - can push them all the way this season.

First speaking about the Gunners' title prospects, the Frenchman told Omnisport: "At the moment you can't look too much at the position because the points difference is very small.

"You draw, you're seventh; you win a game, you're third. I don't think [they can challenge for the title] at the moment on what I've seen."

He then added: "Liverpool are too far ahead for everybody else. Manchester City looks to have the best potential to fight against Liverpool, but as long as you are not too far away, you can hope."

City claimed the Premier League title on the last day of the season 2018/19 season after which saw Liverpool come away emptyhanded despite amassing 97 points.
