Arsene Wenger criticises Virgil van Dijk for what he "refused to do" vs Barcelona

Arsene Wenger has hit out at Virgil van Dijk's defending for Barcelona's opening goal in their 3-0 demolition job against Liverpool.

Luis Suarez opened the scoring for the Catalan giants in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final after losing Van Dijk to fire home.

Former Arsenal boss Wenger told beIN Sports: "Physically they are stronger than Barcelona, especially pace-wise.

"Barcelona made two or three yellow cards because they could not even run with Liverpool's players.

"But when they get into the final third Barca have that quality. One chance, one goal.

Andy Robertson provides Liverpool dressing room insight after Barcelona defeat

"It is very interesting because Virgil van Dijk [usually] covers, but he should go with Suarez to cover that goal.

"Especially from a centre-back with that quality… he lets him go. At the start his position is not bad, but he refuses to respond.

How Lionel Messi nearly played his international football for Spain

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand said on BT Sport: "Virgil van Dijk here, he is at fault. He can see Suarez there, he is pointing where he wants it. It's not rocket scienes. It's right in front of him.

"That's your man, the number nine on the back of his shirt, static. Virgil van Dijk there, static. And that's criminal in that position.

Gary Lineker responds to Liverpool fans' criticism of his Lionel Messi celebration

"He has got to be [Joel] Matip's eyes and ears. Move Matip to where you want to maybe stop the ball in the first instance but if not, you have to go with your man there.

"And he will be disappointed with that I am sure."
