Arsene Wenger calls for Nations League to be scrapped in favour of more World Cup, Euro tournaments

Arsene Wenger has called for the Uefa Nations League to be scrapped - and suggests the European Championships and World Cup should be held every other year instead.

The former Arsenal boss, who was appointed as Fifa's chief of global football development in 2019, has proposed radical changes to the international calendar to cut down on fixture congestion.

The Frenchman claims that fans do not understand the structure of the tournament, which was designed to provide a competitive element to international friendlies.

Wenger believes that there should be a World Cup or European Championship held on a yearly basis, with all qualification fixtures held within a month.

“We need to get rid of the Nations League and find clearer events that everyone understands,” he told German outlet Bild.

“If you ask people in the street what the Nations League is, you won’t find many able to explain it.

“We need to have as few events as possible. One World Cup and one European Championship every other year would probably be more appropriate for a modern world.”

When asked if playing more frequently in the World Cup would result in the tournament losing its unique value, Wenger said: “I always tell people who say this that the image is not linked to the time you wait before playing again, but rather the quality of the competition.

“After all, people also watch the Champions League every year. Personally, I think it would be a great step forward."
