Arsene Wenger and Santi Cazorla set to return to Arsenal for pre-season match

Arsenal are set to welcome Arsene Wenger and Santi Cazorla back to the club for a farewell match as part of their pre-season schedule ahead of next season.

Mirror Sport revealed earlier this month that Gunners chiefs were exploring the prospect of bringing Wenger back to the club for the first time since his 2018 departure.

According to Sportsmail , the Frenchman has now been contacted about the possibility of returning whilst popular former player Cazorla could also be given the chance to say a proper goodbye to fans.

His current club, Villarreal, could play a pre-season friendly against the Gunners to allow him to play in front of the north London faithful one last time before his career comes to an end.

Villarreal could feature against the Gunners in the annual Emirates Cup, although their pre-season plans have yet to be finalised due to the prospect they could have to play in European qualifiers.

Wenger has been reluctant to return to the Emirates since his acrimonious departure amid growing pressure from fans but senior figures want him to return and help unify the fans behind Mikel Arteta.

Cazorla, meanwhile, opened up on his regret over being denied a proper Arsenal farewell by his injury troubles when he departed to head back to Spain in 2018.

“It’s a big sore spot that I don’t know if I can be rid of,” the 35-year-old told Marca .

“I hope I can play there for any team and thank them for the love they have always shown me and continue to show me.

"Last summer there was the option to play the Emirates Cup, but in the end, it didn’t happen, and it was a shame. I hope these doors open for me.”

It appears the chances are he might finally get his wish as he officially brings the curtain down on the six years he spent at Arsenal.
