Arsene Wenger admits he tried to sign Jadon Sancho for Arsenal

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he attempted to sign Jadon Sancho when the youngster was still with Manchester City.

With Sancho struggling for game time at the Etihad, Wenger saw an opportunity to lure the winger away.

Given the teenager's roots in London, having been born in Camberwell, the Arsenal boss was confident he could exploit this to bring Sancho to the north of the capital.

However, Wenger missed out on Sancho who joined Borussia Dortmund from City in August 2017, for a fee reported to be in the region of £8m

Wenger told beIN Sports: "I wanted to take him from Man City when he didn't get the games.

"I tried to lure him because he's from London. I tried to get him to Arsenal. He's one of the best players of his generation. He can dribble, he has the arrogance.

"There's something in there that is part of the big players. You can call it arrogance, confidence, belief; but it has to be there."

Since moving to Germany, Sancho has moved from strength to strength. His performances have helped Dortmund to top the Bundesliga and earned him a senior England cap.
