Arsenal working on three striker deals as Leeds and Manchester United vie for Sam Greenwood

Arsenal's leading Under-23 strikers are on course to depart the club with the Gunners fielding interest in the highly-rated duo of Sam Greenwood and Folarin Balogun.

Meanwhile the Gunners are in the process of narrowing down loan destinations for Tyreece John-Jules, who has attracted interest from the Championship and Europe.

Arsenal's transition team - including academy chief Per Mertesacker, technical director Edu and loan manager Ben Knapper - will narrow down the suitors to around three clubs and hold talks with the leading parties over the coming days.

John-Jules is highly regarded by Arsenal and Mikel Arteta and his loan is viewed as a step on the path to the first team rather than the prelude to a more permanent departure from the Emirates Stadium.

Those are expected to come for Greenwood and Balogun, the former having attracted interest from Leeds United and Manchester United.

Arsenal have set a price tag for Greenwood of £1.5million, potentially rising to £3million subject to add-ons. The 18-year-old, who joined from Sunderland in July 2018, is also of interest to a string of Italian clubs including AC Milan and Juventus, who tried to sign him before he joined the Gunners.

Greenwood impressed at U18 level, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists in 39 games, and earned a promotion to the U23s this season.

Meanwhile Arsenal continue to hold out for a fee of £8million for Balogun, who has informed the club that he will not sign new terms to follow on from his first professional contract, which expires in 10 months' time. Brentford and Southampton are the leading English clubs vying for his signature but there is significant interest from Europe as well.

VfB Stuttgart, led by former Arsenal recruitment chief Sven Mislintat, are also keen on Balogun.

Such an exodus of young striking talent could leave Steve Bould short on options for his U23 side next season but Arsenal would not keep John-Jules in the youth football setup when their priority is to ensure he gets the first team football he needs to develop.

Luke Plange, part of Arsenal's academy setup since 2011, would be the leading contender to step up to the U23s having scored three goals in 10 U18 Premier League games last season.

The Arsenal academy recruitment team, led by Steve Brown, are also proactively hunting for potential additions to the U23 squad having signed winger George Lewis, midfielder Tim Akinola and centre-back Jonathan Dinzeyi in recent days.
