Arsenal Women back to winning ways with victory over Everton

Arsenal Women finished the year with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Everton in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and moved them to second in the table.

Jordan Nobbs and Caitlin Foord bagged early goals before Jen Beattie and Beth Mead sealed the result in the second half.

After moving up the table, Arsenal head coach Joe Montemurro was pleased with the outcome considering the competitive nature of the WSL this season.

“Would I like to have picked up a couple of extra points, yes, I’d love them,” Montemurro said. “But we’re all in, it’s a great league to be part of, a great competition, and as we’ve seen there’s results happening everywhere and Everton are a very good team, so today is pleasing.”

After last week’s defeat to Manchester City, the Gunners started the match with intent when Nobbs got on the scoresheet.

With four minutes on the clock, Mead drove a ball across goal which Nobbs was able to tap in from close range.

And it wasn’t long until Arsenal added another when Foord slotted home past Everton keeper Sandy McIver.

The visitors began to find their feet later on in the first half when Nicoline Sorensen was denied by Lydia Williams and Hayley Raso’s follow-up was deflected wide.

Arsenal were on the front foot again in the second half and Beattie made it 3-0 when she was left unmarked at the back post.

Mead sealed the result moments later when she twisted and turned past Poppy Pattinson and curled home from the edge of the box.
