Arsenal vs Tottenham LIVE: North London derby result, latest updates and reaction after Eze masterclass

LIVE: Arsenal vs Tottenham - (AFP via Getty Images)

Arsenal vs Tottenham LIVE

The north London derby took centre stage in the Premier League today as title-chasing Arsenal took on bitter rivals Tottenham in an important fixture for both sides. The Gunners saw their lead at the top of the table cut yesterday, but opened up a six-point lead with victory at Emirates Stadium.

An extra boost for Mikel Arteta’s side is the win moves them seven points clear of Manchester City and 11 points clear of reigning champions Liverpool after the two expected title rivals were beaten by Newcastle and Nottingham Forest respectively. Arsenal were the dominant team throughout with Eberechi Eze the star of the show as he netted a superb hat-trick.

Tottenham have now suffered their first league defeat on the road this season as Thomas Frank failed in his bid to end Spurs’ 15-year winless run in this particular fixture in what was his very first taste of a north London derby. Follow Arsenal vs Tottenham back below with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog, featuring expert analysis from Simon Collings and Matt Verri at Emirates Stadium!

Here is the goal that broke the deadlock in the north London derby...

Arsenal 2-0 Tottenham

17:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Gary Neville has not been impressed by Tottenham this afternoon.

He said: “Arsenal have been dominant the whole half. That really does highlight it. Spurs have not had one single shot. That is unacceptable.”

HALF-TIME

17:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal 2-0 Tottenham

Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium

17:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tottenham's back three has led to a shift in Arsenal's pressing. Timber has been getting really high and into Udogie, with Zubimendi doing an effective job of then dropping into right-back.

Arsenal 2-0 Tottenham

17:17 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+2 min: Looked like Merino was trying to catch out Vicario with an outrageous attempt inside his own half but the effort lacked any real pace.

Arsenal 2-0 Tottenham

17:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45 min: Three minutes stoppage time.

GOAL! Arsenal 2-0 Tottenham | Eberechi Eze ‘41

17:12 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

41 min: ARSENAL STRIKE AGAIN!

It just had to be him! Eberechi Eze doubles Arsenal’s lead with a fine finish.

Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium

17:09 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal's tails are up, here. A bit like a boxer, they might fancy letting loose and throwing some punches as the half comes to an end.

Matt Verri at Emirates Stadium

17:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Really poor from Udogie and it's cost Spurs. He was deeper than his team-mates and it meant Trossard was onside for Merino's clipped pass. Van de Ven's desperate challenge deflected it past Vicario.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham | Leandro Trossard ‘36

17:07 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

36 min: ARSENAL LEAD!

Mikel Merino picks out Leandro Trossard with a superb pass and the Belgian does the rest!

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

17:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

33 min: Bentancur booked for a foul on Saka.

Gunners captain strikes at goal from the resulting free-kick but Vicario is equal to the effort.

Matt Verri at Emirates Stadium

17:02 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

First chance for Danso to fling it long into the box and it's dangerous, flat into the six-yard box. Arsenal grateful to hear the whistle for a foul because that wasn't hugely convincing from them.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

17:01 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

31 min: First chance for Danso to produce one of his long throws but Romero is penalised for a foul.

Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium

17:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Credit to Spurs, they've done a very good job of making this game so stop-start. Arsenal struggling to break them down.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

17:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

30 min: Good defending by Van de Ven as he gets himself in between Timber and the ball just as a chance appeared to be opening up for his fellow Dutchman.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:57 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

27 min: Spurs almost get caught out trying to build from the back as Rice gets a touch on the ball but he can’t retain possession and the visitors get a goal kick.

Matt Verri at Emirates Stadium

16:56 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

We've played 25 minutes and Michael Oliver has seen enough to call Cristian Romero over, presumably to tell him the time-wasting has to stop.

I'd suggest that won't be happening...

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

25 min: Gunners finding it tough to break down this Tottenham defence. Five across the back and then another four across the middle.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:53 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

23 min: A large section of the Arsenal fans are growing frustrated with the length of time it’s taking Spurs to restart the game from throw-ins and set-pieces.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

20 min: Another Spurs set-piece and once again Danso makes first contact with Vicario’s long punt but the visitors can’t win the second ball and Arsenal push up the pitch.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

18 min: Free-kick to Arsenal in a promising position after Udogie fouled Saka. Gunners captain to take...and he whips an effort over the bar.

Just a touch too high.

Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium

16:47 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arteta has been, noticeably, more mellow on the touchline this season - but not today. He is bouncing around and full of energy.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:46 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

16 min: First Spurs set-piece sees Vicario launch the ball into the box where Danso makes first contact, but Raya is off his line to claim.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:44 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

14 min: Update - Trossard is back on and moving a lot more freely.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

13 min: Trossard is struggling following an accidental clash of knees with Palhinha. The Belgian looks like he may need to come off.

Madueke sent to warm up.

Matt Verri at Emirates Stadium

16:41 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Udogie has been told to hurry up taking every one of his throw-ins so far by the referee. Arteta, meanwhile, almost fell over himself just now trying to retrieve the ball for Timber. Arsenal trying to keep the pace up - Spurs exactly the opposite.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:39 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

9 min: Rushed clearance from Danso sees the ball eventually drop to Merino in the area, he fires at goal but Romero takes the sting out of the effort which makes things easier for Vicario.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:38 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

7 min: The game is getting a bit spicy with some Arsenal fans not happy with tackles made by Van de Ven and Richarlison in quick succession.

It is a derby after all...

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

5 min: Arsenal fans have certainly upped their Tifo game!

No surprise, but the Emirates is the loudest it has been all season.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

16:33 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

2 min: Scooped pass from Eze finds Rice who is denied by Vicario.

Matt Verri at Emirates Stadium

16:31 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Just the 19 seconds until the Champions of Europe chant comes out from the Spurs fans. Not sure what took that long.

Mikel Arteta explains Piero Hincapie decision

16:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta has revealed why he chose Piero Hincapie to replace Gabriel in Arsenal’s backline for the north London derby against Tottenham.

Gabriel has been ruled out for “weeks” after he picked up an injury on international duty with Brazil.

Hincapie, a loan arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, has struggled for fitness in the early stages of his Arsenal career, but he is given the nod to partner William Saliba in the heart of the home defence this afternoon.

The Ecuadorian has played just five times this term in all competitions for his new side, but now he gets the opportunity to start in central defence.

Will be interesting to see how Spurs shape up in attack.

At Brentford it was often a 3-5-2 when Frank went three at the back, as it was in the Super Cup against PSG in August. Kudus and Richarlison were the front two that night.

If that's repeated here, it could mean Odobert at No10 for the first time.

Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium

As you'd expect, there are tonnes of broadcasters, here, today and conducting interviews by the pitch.

Among the ex players in attendance are Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires and Paul Robinson. Jaap Stam and Peter Schmeichel are here, too.

Thomas Frank reveals why Arsenal are a 'good example' for Tottenham

16:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Thomas Frank pointed to Mikel Arteta and Arsenal as he urged Tottenham to stick to a philosophy over a period of time.

The Spurs boss will get his first experience of a competitive north London derby on Sunday when his side look to end their 15-year winless run away at Arsenal in the Premier League.

Arteta is now a veteran of the fixture, having taken charge of Arsenal six years ago, and this looks set to be the fourth season in a row in which the Gunners mount a serious title challenge.

In that period, Spurs have jolted between the likes of Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Ange Postecoglou.

Mikel Arteta reveals plan for Gabriel Jesus comeback

15:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus may play in a behind-closed-doors friendly as he steps up his recovery from a long-term knee injury.

Jesus ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in an FA Cup tie against Manchester United back in January and underwent surgery.

The Brazilian international has not played since, but is now back in full training and Mikel Arteta has explained how Arsenal will look to gradually increase his workload.

Those plans may include the club organising a friendly to be played at their London Colney training ground in the coming weeks.

More on that here!

Simon Collings at Emirates Stadium

15:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Personally, I think it is the right call for Arteta to go with Hincapie to replace Gabriel.

I think he is the most similar in style and profile to Gabriel.

This is still a huge game for him in what is the Ecuadorian's first Premier League start.

Frank sends warning to Tottenham owners

15:47 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Thomas Frank is confident Tottenham's owners will deliver on their ambitious words in the upcoming transfer windows, but warned they must prove it is more than "big headlines".

The younger generations of the Lewis family have taken on an increasingly active role at Spurs this year and led the decision to remove Daniel Levy in September.

It was announced last month that the majority owners had injected £100million of new capital into the club, though it is understood that is not just a transfer kitty.

Those funds will also go towards the day-to-day running of the club as well as paying off fees for transfers that have been made in previous windows.

The Lewis family have emphasised this is a new era at Spurs and that they want more consistent success, and Frank expects that to be backed up with actions.

Mikel Arteta reveals Bukayo Saka contract update

15:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta is “confident” that Bukayo Saka will sign a new contract with Arsenal.

Saka is approaching the final 18 months of his current deal in north London and is in talks with the Gunners over an extension.

Arteta believes that an agreement will be found as Saka and his agent, Emeka Obasi, have both communicated that the England winger wants to stay put.

Three big Tottenham decisions facing Thomas Frank

15:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tottenham face the toughest test of the Thomas Frank era so far when they play Arsenal.

The north London derby comes with the Gunners three points clear at the top of the Premier League and looking for a fourth straight win over Spurs.

Frank's side do have the best away record in the league, are yet to be beaten on the road and recorded a statement win over Manchester City at the Etihad in August.

The Spurs boss has been keen to tweak from match to match, at times perhaps too much. The criticism has been that Frank has focused on nullifying the opposition more than maximising Spurs' strengths.

With that in mind, here are three key selection dilemmas for Frank to consider for the trip to Arsenal...

Stage set for Eberechi Eze to make his mark

15:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

If things had turned out differently, Eberechi Eze could have been lining up for Tottenham and not Arsenal on Sunday.

Spurs were chasing his signature during the summer transfer window as they looked to bring in an attacking midfielder following a long-term knee injury sustained by James Maddison.

Talks were underway between Crystal Palace and Tottenham when Eze phoned Mikel Arteta to see if Arsenal would come to the table.

In a matter of days, the Gunners swooped to get their man from under the noses of their arch-rivals.

Frank can be Tottenham's secret weapon in derby

14:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A nice gentle reintroduction to club football after the international break this is not, writes Matt Verri.

Tottenham make the trip to face Arsenal in Thomas Frank's first competitive north London derby this afternoon, before travelling to Paris-Saint Germain on Wednesday night.

Away days at the Premier League leaders and the Champions League holders in the space of three days are not ordinarily relished, but they could be where Frank feels most comfortable.

Three key issues that will decide Arsenal vs Tottenham

14:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

The north London derby never fails to entertain - but Tottenham will be hoping to change their fortunes today, writes Simon Collings.

Spurs have failed to win any of their last six meetings with Arsenal - losing five of them - since beating the Gunners 3-0 in May 2022.

Arsenal have been the dominant force in north London over the past three seasons and they will be eyeing another win to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League.

Here, Standard Sport looks at three key areas that could decide the game…

(Standard Sport)

Predicted Tottenham XI

14:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tottenham are set to switch to a back three for the north London derby against Arsenal.

Thomas Frank is set to bring in Kevin Danso alongside Cristian Romero and Micky van de Van at Emirates Stadium.

Xavi Simons looks set to have to settle for a place on the bench, with Wilson Odobert and Mohammed Kudus set to start alongside Richarlison in attack.

Predicted Tottenham XI: Vicario, Spence, Romero, Danso, Van de Ven, Udogie, Palhinha, Bentancur, Kudus, Richarlison, Odobert.

(London Standard)

Predicted Arsenal XI

14:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal have been suffering from a lack of forwards in recent weeks due to injury, but some may return this afternoon.

Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke have all been out with knee injuries, while Gabriel Martinelli and Viktor Gyokeres have both been dealing with muscular issues.

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Hincapie, Calafiori; Eze, Zubimendi, Rice; Saka, Merino, Trossard.

Arsenal vs Tottenham prediction

Arsenal, even without Gabriel, will be confident of shutting Spurs out and securing a victory to open up an 11-point gap over their neighbours.

While Spurs can point to an impressive away record, built on an impressive defence and sturdy midfield, it is in attack where they are often lacking.

Tottenham team news

14:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Randal Kolo Muani is pushing to start for Tottenham against Arsenal after training in a specially fitted mask to help protect his jaw injury.

There were fears the on-loan French forward could miss as much as two months with the jaw injury he suffered Manchester United before the international break.

But Kolo Muani was told surgery was not required and he has taken part in full training in recent days wearing a mask.

The forward is in contention to face Arsenal, with Thomas Frank's hand significantly strengthened by the return of a number of players.

Arsenal team news

14:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal face Tottenham at Emirates Stadium on Sunday and Mikel Arteta looks set to be boosted by the fitness of some key players.

Riccardo Calafiori, Martin Odegaard, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli were spotted with the Arsenal squad as the players left the team hotel ahead of the north London derby.

However, there was no sign of Viktor Gyokeres or Kai Havertz as the players went on their morning walk.
