Arsenal vs Tottenham: Harry Kane a doubt for Carabao Cup quarter-final clash

Harry Kane is a fitness concern for Tottenham’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Arsenal at the Emirates on Wednesday night.

The England captain did not train outside on Tuesday as he recovers from a cold and now he will have to be assessed on Wednesday to see if he is ready to play. “We need to assess him because he had a cold this morning, and he didn’t go outside to train,” Mauricio Pochettino revealed in his press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

“Big decision. If we consider that can cover 90 minutes, maybe he can play. If not maybe he will be on the bench. And if nothing happens in the afternoon. To protect him he didn’t train outside, he was doing something in the gym.”

Pochettino is preparing to make a few changes as he balances his squad for the challenges ahead. Spurs have fewer rest days than anyone else over the Christmas period, the start of a busy winter before their Champions League campaign resumes against Borussia Dortmund.

Pochettino will stick with Paolo Gazzaniga in goal after the Argentinean goalkeeper impressed in his five stand-in appearances this season. “He is going to play. We consider Hugo for different reasons needs to breathe. Paulo after Watford and West Ham deserves to play.”

Spurs will welcome another Argentinean back into the fold with Juan Foyth back in the squad after missing the last two weeks with a thigh injury. He will likely partner Toby Alderweireld at centre-back. Davinson Sanchez is also back in the training after missing six weeks with a hamstring injury but he will not be involved tomorrow night. “He is close, maybe for the weekend,” Pochettino said. Spurs travel to Everton on Sunday.

With Eric Dier still recovering from surgery to remove his appendix, and Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama also out, Oliver Skipp is in line for a second senior start.
