Arsenal vs Newcastle United

18:28

Arsenal responded after a lacklustre first half and take all three points from Newcastle United, guaranteeing a second-placed finish in the Premier League courtesy of a 1-0 win. It could have very easily been a three or four goal lead for the Magpies within 20 minutes if not for heroic goalkeeping from Raya, who made point-blank saves on Burn, Botman and Guimaraes to keep his side in the tie early. The Gunners weathered the storm but couldn’t turn defence into attack as they struggled to break down the low block, creating just 0.37 xG in the first half, but they were clinical when it mattered most as Rice popped up five minutes before the hour to stroke a first-time finish home. White could have doubled the hosts’ advantage but it wouldn’t have been needed anyway, as Howe’s team largely failed to regain the momentum they generated in the first half. Newcastle finished the game with an xG of 1.60 - with 1.2 of that coming in the opening period - while Arsenal won the game with just 0.65. Arteta’s side will finish the season next week against already relegated Southampton and are assured of their place, while Newcastle United welcome Everton to St. James’ Park on May 25 in need of a win. That concludes our commentary of the Premier League fixture between Arsenal and Newcastle United - we hope you’ve enjoyed it!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

18:01

Arsenal are in no rush to play the ball into Newcastle’s penalty area, with both Trossard and Lewis-Skelly refusing opportunities to work a cross in from the left. It appears Arteta’s side are unwilling to take risks at this stage with a lead to protect and are attempting to limit the Magpies’ opportunities to counter.

SO CLOSE! White charges forward into midfield ahead of Gordon and receives Odegaard's pass in stride before hitting a skipping shot to the far post that misses the target by inches!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:54

A win for Arsenal in this fixture takes any jeopardy out of their final-day meeting with already relegated Southampton, as their 71-point total would put them out of reach of the chasing pack. Newcastle would need a win against Everton to guarantee their status in the top five, with four teams vying for three places in what’s sure to be a chaotic final day of the Premier League season.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

Goal Declan Rice

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:40

The result as it stands keeps Arsenal two points and one place ahead of Newcastle United with only one matchweek remaining after today. It also guarantees a top-three finish for the Gunners, with Chelsea and Aston Villa lagging far behind in goal difference. The Magpies would stay third with a tie, one point ahead of the aforementioned pair, but it would not be good enough to guarantee Champions League football ahead of the final day.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:40

Rice’s low corner-kick delivery to the near post is met by Murphy, who can only send his clearance into the back of an unsuspecting Kiwior. The block keeps the ball inside Newcastle’s penalty area and causes a bit of a goalmouth scramble but it’s dealt with by Pope, who hangs on to Saka’s prodded header.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:36

Saka plays his corner low and short to the near post for Trossard, who promptly returns the ball to the winger. Looking for an angle to deliver a cross, Newcastle close the space down well and force Arsenal back, eventually all the way to Raya.

Howe will be pleased with the way his side operated in the first half, though the coach will be left frustrated by his team’s inability to capitalise on their momentum. Willock could be used to add a bit more thrust through midfield, while Osula is the first-choice option to play in place of or alongside Wilson in attack. Arteta, on the other hand, will need to do something to spark his side into action after a rather lifeless opening period in attack. Havertz is on the bench for the first time after a long injury lay-off and could be called upon to lead the line in the late stages - partly to work him back to fitness. Nwaneri and Sterling will also be desperate to get into the game and make an impact, especially with most of Arsenal’s attacks coming down the flanks.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:18

An eventful first half at the Emirates somehow comes to a close without a goal, as Arsenal and Newcastle United are left to rue missed opportunities. The Gunners had their first - and only - real opportunity after less than a quarter-hour, with Pope getting to Partey’s close-range header but it was Raya who was the more worked of the two goalkeepers, making five tremendous stops within the first 20 minutes. Guimaraes could have opened the scoring within seven minutes, only to see his two chances denied by the Arsenal shot-stopper, while Burn was similarly repelled a half-dozen minutes later when his point-blank header was turned away by Raya. Despite seeing much more of the ball, Arteta’s side struggled to create in the face of Newcastle’s low and narrow block, which prevented Odegaard and Rice from influencing the game; a reality which is born out in their xG stats (0.37 to the Magpies’ 1.20). The hosts were reduced to set-pieces and shots from distance, which suited Howe’s side and their set up.

HALF-TIME: ARSENAL 0-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:18

It doesn’t appear as though any time will be added on to the end of the first half, with the game seeing minimal stoppages.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:17

Newcastle are the first visiting team to have 10 or more shots in the first half of a Premier League game at the Emirates since Manchester United in April 2022 (11).

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:13

Following their 1-0 win at St James’ Park in November, Newcastle are looking to complete their first league double over Arsenal since 1994-95.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:12

Raya opts to go long from his penalty spot but it’s a poor decision, with Saka unable to reach the delivery under close marking from Burn. Even if he had brought down the ball, the England international would have been left isolated, as Arsenal’s attack continues to struggle.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:10

Seven of Newcastle's 10 outfield starters have had an attempt on goal with the only players yet to being Wilson, Gordon and Murphy.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:09

Martinelli’s deep, inswinging corner is knocked back across the face of goal by the head of White, but Burn inserts himself and scrambles the ball away temporarily.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:06

Saka and Odegaard work a short-corner routine to the edge of the 18-yard box for Lewis-Skelly, who puts his back-post cross too far ahead of Partey, who fails to keep the ball in play.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:05

Saka’s low corner to the near post is met initially by Murphy, whose poor clearance sends the ball straight up in the air and behind for a do-over.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:03

Saliba wins the ball from Livramento on his own byline and sprints forward before spraying a lovely pass into Newcastle’s half for Martinelli. The Brazil international greets it with a perfect first touch to take him past the covering Schar, but Pope comes a long way out of his penalty area to blast it away for a throw-in and buy his side time to reorganise.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

17:00

Rice has a go on his right foot from over 25 yards out, sending a tame, bouncing shot towards Pope, who gathers it easily.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:59

Lewis-Skelly points forward so as to direct Martinelli before using the bouncing ball in midfield to slice a volleyed pass, but it’s sent right into the path of the awaiting Pope.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:57

Following their 1-0 win at St James’ Park in November, Newcastle are looking to complete their first league double over Arsenal since 1994-95.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:55

Trossard cuts inside ahead of both Murphy and Barnes before playing a reverse-pass back out to the wing for Lewis-Skelly, whose first-time cross goes unmet by a team-mate at the back post.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:54

Burn again gets his head to an inswinging Tonali corner-kick, but he sends his latest effort over the crossbar before the referee blows his whistle for a foul on Trossard in the build up.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:53

Gordon and Guimaraes work a one-two pass in midfield that gives the former the freedom of the left wing, but his eventual cross just ahead of the byline is put behind for a corner by Saliba.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:52

Raya has made five saves in the opening 20 minutes of this game. Only against Manchester City in September has he made more saves in a Premier League game this season (nine).

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:50

TWO MORE SAVES FOR RAYA! Tonali’s inswinging corner is met at the near post by the physically imposing Burn, who manages to turn the ball towards goal from six yards away. Raya throws an arm to the header and pushes it away, only as far as Barnes, whose shot while falling is kicked away by the Arsenal goalkeeper!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:48

GREAT REACTIONS! Barnes is allowed to carry the ball through the heart of Arsenal’s midfield without anyone in his way before he pulls a low, left-footed shot to the far corner. The effort takes a deflection off Saliba and looks to evade the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper, who manages to poke it behind for a corner with a second-effort stretch!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:46

Arsenal’s latest corner-kick doesn’t go quite as well, with Trossard and Saka working a short routine to Odegaard, who blazes a left-footed effort high over the crossbar.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:46

FANTASTIC SAVE! Saka flashes a flat corner into the six-yard box, where Partey’s glancing header is repelled at point-blank range by Pope, who lifts an arm to turn the ball behind for a second set-piece.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:46

Trossard gets to the byline with the ball at his feet before cutting back with intent, leaving a Newcastle defender on the ground before rifling a left-footed effort that takes a deflection on its way behind for a corner.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:45

Odegaard wraps his left foot around the ball to deliver a curling cross to the penalty spot, where Schar leaps above Martinelli to head it away.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:44

Livramento gets to the edge of Arsenal’s 18-yard box and plays a pass towards the byline for Gordon, who uses a nifty backheel flick to return the ball to the wing-back. Without a second thought, he curls a first-time effort towards goal and looks to test Raya, who hangs on to the effort.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:42

Short of options through the middle, Partey hits a switch of play out to the left for the advanced Lewis-Skelly, who is unable to get ahead of Murphy in a race for the ball.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:41

Newcastle’s wing-backs are holding very narrow starting positions when out of possession, which is clogging up the middle of the pitch. The visitors are hoping to force their opponents out wide, where Gordon and Barnes can help support Murphy and Livramento, while denying Odegaard space to play incisive passes into the penalty area.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:39

RAYA GETS A PALM TO IT! Arsenal give possession straight to Tonali in midfield after a poor pass out from the back, which allows Newcastle to attack immediately. The ball is rolled into the path of Wilson, who lays it off on the penalty spot to Guimaraes, but the Brazil international’s shot is blocked by Raya from close range. The second effort looks to be looping over the head of the floored shot-stopper, but he reaches out an arm and whacks it away!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:36

White charges forward into Newcastle’s 18-yard box to get on the end of Odegaard’s inviting pass, but Burn manages to get there first and put the ball out of play with a well-timed sliding challenge.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:34

Raya goes long from just outside his penalty area, curling his kick out to the left in search of Saka, only to put the ball into an empty pocket of space and out for a Newcastle throw.

16:19

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:03

Newcastle United have won six of their eight Premier League fixtures (losing just once) since beating Liverpool in the EFL Cup final, which has significantly increased their likelihood of finishing within the top five. Eddie Howe’s side followed up a last-gasp 1-1 draw with Brighton two weeks ago with a crucial 2-0 win over Chelsea, which keeps the Magpies first amongst three teams level on 66 points, and they could overtake today’s opponents in the table with a fourth-consecutive win over Arsenal.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

16:03

Arsenal welcome Newcastle United to the Emirates looking to confirm their position in the top five and Champions League football ahead of next season, despite looking virtually guaranteed of a second-placed finish about a month ago. Since beating Fulham 2-1 on April 1, Arsenal have only managed to win one of their subsequent six matches - taking seven points in that time - which has allowed five clubs to close the gap with the Gunners to three points. A win today would ensure Mikel Arteta’s side take part in next campaign’s elite European competition, though anything less would leave some doubts ahead of the final day.
