Arsenal vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction

Arsenal vs Newcastle - LIVE!

Arsenal sealed Champions League qualification as Declan Rice’s brilliant finish earned them a 1-0 win over Newcastle. The victory also effectively wrapped up second place in the Premier League for a third consecutive season, and ended a five-match winless run.

The Magpies, who went into the match with three wins over Arsenal this season to their name, were the better side in the first-half, with David Raya forced into five saves before the break. Mikel Arteta’s side though, were improved after half-time and took the lead ten minutes after the restart, when Rice fired in a superb first-time effort into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

The Arsenal boss was booked late on for kicking a ball back onto the pitch and that means he will serve a touchline ban on the final day of the season, but there is now effectively nothing riding on that trip to Southampton for the Gunners.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

18:18 , Matt Verri

Arsenal dropping deeper and deeper, haven’t really offered anything in attack in the last 15 minutes or so.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

18:11 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Willock with a great twisting run in the box, beats White and then smacks an effort high and wide. Should have done better.

That Arteta yellow, by the way, means he will serve a touchline ban on the final day of the season.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

18:09 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Arteta kicks the ball back for Newcastle to take a throw-in... and gets booked for it.

He looks perplexed at that. Referee thinks he was delaying the restart.

And Schar smacks it into them, before a charging Martinelli ensures the ball goes all the way back to Pope.

Good position this for Newcastle, 25 yards out and with a decent angle.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

18:03 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Decent chance for Newcastle, but Barnes blazes over from the edge of the box.

Arteta turns to his bench for the first time and it’s a popular change.

Huge ovation for Saka as he comes off, even bigger one for Havertz on his return after more than three months out.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

18:01 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Newcastle haven’t found it as easy this half to get at the Arsenal defence. Whatever tweak Arteta has made in midfield has worked.

Now they can break.... until Trossard plays the through ball perfectly to Schar.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

18:00 , Matt Verri

20 minutes to go and Arteta has four players warming up, one of which is Havertz.

I think his height could be handy, here, as it'd give Arsenal an out-ball.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

17:57 , Matt Verri

69 mins: White with another foray into Newcastle territory.

Space opens up for him 25 yards out, catches the strike so sweetly... flies past the far post.

Not sure Pope was getting there.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

17:55 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Pace of the match has slowed down, which will suit Arsenal.

Rice still full of energy, though, makes a good run in behind. Martinelli tries to play him in but Krafth gets across.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

17:52 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Martinelli gets in behind as Krafth misjudges a long ball forward.

Arteta, Martinelli and 60,000 Arsenal fans screaming for a red card, in response to Krafth dragging the Brazilian to the ground.

Just a yellow.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

17:51 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Triple change for Newcastle.

Murphy, Wilson and Botman all make way, as Miley, Osula and Krafth are introduced.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

17:49

61 mins: Saka again with space on that right wing.

And again it’s no surprise as he comes inside, this time the shot is on target but it’s a routine save for Pope. Not enough pace on the effort.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

17:46 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Saka runs straight at Burn, who doesn’t fancy a bit of that foot race.

Cuts inside onto his left foot, tries to curl a strike into the far corner but it smashes into Botman and he’s gone down after that blow to the head.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

17:45 , Matt Verri

Rice now with nine goals in all competitions this season.

Needs one more to hit double figures for first time in his career.

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

17:45

57 mins: Arsenal finally score against Newcastle this season... it’s taken four matches!

Momentum firmly with them now, as Trossard clips a cross to the edge of the box. Partey can’t do anything with the header.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle | Declan Rice 55'

17:42 , Matt Verri

It had been coming since half-time!

Gordon loses it and he is ruthlessly punished by the Gunners.

Odegaard plays it inside to Rice, who whips a sensational first-time strike into the bottom corner from 20 yards out!

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:41 , Matt Verri

53 mins: White tries to see the ball out of play, but Livramento robs him and Newcastle are on the attack.

Gordon in space on the edge of the box, but Odegaard is back to win it for the hosts.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:38 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Newcastle haven’t left their half since the break.

Lewis-Skelly with a brilliant touch and turn in the box, his shot is deflected behind. Yet another corner.

To the near post, it bobbles around before Saka’s header bounces up and Pope claims under pressure.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

17:35 , Matt Verri

A rare chance to see Calafiori at centre-back in this half.

If you speak to many Italian journalists, it's his best position - even if he has played at left-back this season for Arsenal.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:35 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Arsenal were much-improved after the break against Liverpool last weekend and it’s been a better start here, as White charges forward on the overlap and forces a corner.

Taken short, and Arsenal end up back with Raya in their own half.

Do short corners ever work?

Back underway!

17:32 , Matt Verri

Up and running again.

Change at the break from Arsenal, as Calafiori replaces Saliba.

White heavily involved

17:26 , Matt Verri

Not sure that’s particularly what Arsenal want to see...

Yes Ben White is getting forward well, but there are plenty of other players the Gunners will want to be more involved than him in the opposition box.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

17:20 , Matt Verri

Newcastle will be disappointed to not be ahead.

David Raya made a number of good saves to keep the game level.

Arsenal not got going and midfield, in particular, looks uncharacteristically open. All a bit flat, so far.

FT: Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:16 , Matt Verri

Not a second of added-time.

Goalless at the break and Newcastle will be the happier of the two sides, having had the best chances.

Arsenal much more open in midfield and at the back than we have been used to.

(Action Images via Reuters)

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:15 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Martinelli runs down a lonely path on the left wing, two Newcastle players for company.

They shut the door and Botman watches it run out for a goal-kick.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:12 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Wouldn’t say Arsenal particularly look like scoring, particularly in open play.

No real spark in the final third. Lots of passes, not a lot of threat.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:09 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Botman strolls into midfield and opens Arsenal up with one pass, Livramento running straight through the middle.

Doesn’t have the pace to get away though, and Partey sticks out a leg.

Arsenal then give it away twice in about ten seconds, huge groans of frustration from the crowd.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:07 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Here we go again... the corner war resumes.

On the opposite wing this time, so Rice is over to take in front of the Newcastle fans.

Swung deep to the back post, White nods it down but Newcastle clear the danger.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

17:05 , Matt Verri

A big cheer goes up for Kai Havertz as he heads out for a little jog and warm up.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:04 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Newcastle letting Trossard stand by himself, they want Arsenal to take it short.

Gunners listen to them, worked out to the edge of the box and Lewis-Skelly swings a cross out of play.

Newcastle win that particular battle.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:04 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Arsenal take a short corner... useless. Trossard does well to win another one.

This one swung in right on top of Pope, who does just about enough to punch it behind. Take three.

Saka’s ball in barely makes the near post, but Murphy shanks the clearance. Make that take four.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

17:01

30 mins: Pope charges 40 yards off his line to boot the ball out of play, just as Martinelli thought he was in.

On the other flank, Saka has a rare chance to run at his man and gets to the byline. Guimaraes there to clear the cut-back.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

16:59 , Matt Verri

Arsenal look very open this afternoon, far more so than usual.

Even with Rice back in the team, they're lacking solidity and struggling to plug holes.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:58 , Matt Verri

27 mins: It’s been so easy for Gordon to get in behind the Arsenal defence.

Long ball over the top, he knocks it past Saliba and then plays the ball across the face of goal... Wilson can’t catch up with it.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:56 , Matt Verri

25 mins: White runs and runs and runs and runs.

Ignores Saka on the overlap, cuts into the box and then goes down, as Burn slides in.

Very optimistic appeals for a penalty - there was no contact.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:53 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Swung into the near post, Burn wins the header but it’s over the bar.

Whistle had gone anyway, Guimaraes just shoved Trossard over at the near post. Two hands in the back not particularly subtle.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:52 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Gordon away down the left this time, White again caught out of position.

Saliba across to charge down the cross, but it will be another corner for Newcastle. Well on top.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:49 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Chaos in the Arsenal box!

Raya desperately keeping Newcastle at bay. Great save to deny Burn after a flicked header, and he then kicks away the rebound.

Arsenal all over the place at the back.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:48 , Matt Verri

16 mins: The latest of those comes as Raya tips Barnes’ effort wide, after a deflection off Partey.

Taken short, Tonali fires in a great cross and Kiwior can only flick it behind for another one.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

16:47 , Matt Verri

Just over 15 minutes gone here and I make it that Raya has already made four saves - which tells its own story.

Newcastle looking sharp on the break.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:45 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Arsenal’s best moment and it’s all Trossard.

Skips past Murphy, drifts inside onto his right foot and hammers an effort at goal, deflected wide of the far post. Corner.

Saka swings it in, Partey gets a flick and Pope somehow tips it over from point-blank range! Ridiculously good.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:42 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Open feel to this match.

Newcastle’s turn to break, with White out of position and Arsenal stretched.

Gordon flicks it into the path of Livramento, who drives into the box and forces Raya into a decent save.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:40 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Partey gets a shot away from the edge of the box, charged down.

Pretty much everything going down Arsenal’s right, with that familiar trio of White, Saka and Odegaard.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:37 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Arsenal nearly get themselves into all sorts of trouble.

Really poor pass from Raya, ball comes to Guimaraes and it’s a good save from the Arsenal goalkeeper to make up for it.

He then gets up in time to claw the ball away.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

16:35 , Matt Verri

Newcastle look like they have gone with a back-three again, with Jacob Murphy at right wing-back.

Surely an area for Arsenal to target.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:35 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Burn needed to be very, very careful.

Lovely turn from Odegaard and he slides in White on the overlap. Full-back looks to be in behind in the box, but Burn lunges in and hooks the ball away.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

16:34 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Newcastle a man lighter in midfield today, with this back-three system.

Trossard is floating around everywhere, Martinelli drifting centrally... lots of fluidity to the Arsenal system.

KICK-OFF!

16:31 , Matt Verri

Underway in north London!

16:29 , Matt Verri

Teams out, handshakes done, we’re ready to get up and running.

Forest’s 2-1 win at West Ham has put a bit more pressure on Newcastle in the race to secure a top-five finish.

Can get a few low-key matches at this stage of the season, but this shouldn’t be one of those.

Not long now!

16:26 , Matt Verri

Kick-off at the Emirates just a few minutes away.

Sky Sports have got themselves a bit of a disaster. The first match of their Super Sunday, West Ham vs Nottingham Forest, was supposed to be well wrapped up by now.

Instead they’re currently in the 106th minute and still playing...

Arteta: Big Six a thing of the past

16:21 , Matt Verri

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes the days of the Premier League’s conventional ‘Big Six’ are over.

The Gunners have fought for the title alongside Liverpool this season, while Chelsea and Manchester City are hoping to qualify for the Champions League.

Manchester United and Tottenham, however, are languishing in 16th and 17th place respectively with just two games remaining.

Instead, the likes of Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle have been vying to finish in the top five.

And asked if the days of a traditional hierarchy consisting of the ‘Big Six’ are gone, Arteta said: “I think so.

“I think the level has gone to something bigger than what we experienced in the previous 12 months, last season and past experience.

“I know a lot of the coaches and we had discussions about that, so it’s frightening the way it’s evolving, how competitive it is, how difficult it is to win.

“The margins for why you win or don’t win in the Premier League is incredible, so next season is going to be even more difficult.”

Newcastle flying high

16:10 , Matt Verri

It’s already been an incredible season for Newcastle, who won the Carabao Cup to end their long trophy wait.

They are now within touching distance of a return to the Champions League, and maybe even second place.

Not too shabby...

Stumbling home form

15:59 , Matt Verri

Arsenal only have the sixth best home record in the Premier League this season.

Ten wins, six draws and two defeats from their 18 matches so far - too many dropped points to keep within touch of Liverpool.

Bournemouth and West Ham the two sides to leave the Emirates with victory.

Transformed Havertz raising standards

15:49 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta says there has been a “transformation” in Kai Havertz’s body during his injury lay-off.

“The last three years in his career have been so condensed that he hasn’t had time to do that and this has been a window and he really wanted to use it,” Arteta said.

“I think he destroyed all the metrics that we had in the gym for the last ten years.

“All of them. Power, acceleration, muscle mass, the way that he has increased certain capacities in his body, his agility, he’s been incredible. I was talking to the medical staff the other day and they were talking about that.

“For someone that is not in the team to have that mindset, the only thing he has done is raise the standards in the building because the other ones in the building who are injured were looking at him: ‘I’m going to look bad if I don’t do the same’ - so that’s part of the culture.

“And [I am] very grateful because when the players that are not playing are doing that, it’s just raising the bar for the next one to come. If he is not at that level he is gonna get exposed so that will make us better.”

Win for Arsenal and they will almost certainly finish the season in second.

Lose and it will be Newcastle sitting second heading into the final match of the campaign.

Fair bit riding on it...

Havertz in the squad

15:30

Kai Havertz could make his first appearance since February.

It’s been a swift recovery from hamstring surgery for the German and he will hope to feature off the bench this afternoon.

Big boost for the Gunners... it’s been a long few months without a recognised striker.

Big blow for Magpies

15:23 , Matt Verri

No Alexander Isak for Newcastle.

He has what the club have described as a “minor groin injury”, so Callum Wilson leads the line for the Magpies.

Otherwise it’s basically as expected, with Sven Botman fit to start.

Kroenke makes investment vow

15:06 , Matt Verri

Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke says the club will invest in the squad this summer as they strive to win major trophies.

The Gunners wait for silverware is now at five years after they failed to win a trophy this season.

“As a club, we’re striving to win major trophies and, on the men’s front, we know we have fallen short of what we all wanted this season,” said Kroenke.

“Despite not reaching the Champions League final in Munich, our run to the semi-final of the competition still created some of our best nights this season.

“Our match here against Real Madrid was one of the best games and the most electric atmospheres we’ve experienced at Emirates Stadium. The game we played at the Bernabeu will no doubt live forever with those lucky enough to have been there.

“Mikel and his coaching staff, as well as the players, faced some challenges throughout the season and I want to give credit to the way they managed in these circumstances. It’s in these moments you learn the most.

“We plan to invest to get behind winning and doing better next season. We’re delighted we have our sporting director, Andrea [Berta], who will play an important role in this.

“Ultimately, we all want the same thing. We’re as hungry for success as you are and that goes for everyone who works for the club.”

Arsenal aim to avoid unwanted history

14:56 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta has spent most of the past two months telling his Arsenal players how they can create history.

The Gunners’ Champions League run is now over, but their chance to make history remains as they prepare to welcome Newcastle to the Emirates Stadium.

It is, however, unwanted history on the line for Arsenal as they bid to avoid a fourth defeat this season to the Magpies.

No side has ever beaten the Gunners four times in a single campaign, but Newcastle could become the first after winning at St James’ Park in the Premier League earlier this season and also beating Arsenal in both legs of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

“They’re a very difficult team for any opposition, I think,” said Arteta, when asked about Newcastle being Arsenal’s bogey team.

“What [manager] Eddie [Howe], the staff and as a club they’ve done over the last few years is remarkable. They’ve been very, very consistent and very difficult to play against, like we’ve been.

Arteta gives update on Arsenal transfer plans

14:45 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta has hinted Arsenal are ready to push the boat out for the right player this summer - likening the club’s transfer budget as trying to keep costs down for a wedding.

Arsenal’s priority is to sign a new striker, but they are also in the market for a winger and backup goalkeeper.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is expected to join too, while the club may add to their defence depending on outgoings.

Arsenal have traditionally operated with a self-sustainable model under their current owners, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, but they have also shown a willingness to spend big.

“The thing is that the budget is like when you have your wedding, you plan your wedding with your wife and you give her a budget and never less, it’s always more,” said Arteta.

“When you build a house it’s always more. Normally this happens. You prepare for different scenarios.

“Then unfortunate things happen. Sometimes we want a player and suddenly we have an injury or that player gets injured.

“There are so many variables that can happen but there is a budget. There is always an idea of what we can do, what we can improve, what the priorities are going to be and then let's see if we can do it.”

Stage is set!

14:37 , Matt Verri

Magpies have arrived in north London.

They came out on top when these sides met here in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, one of three wins over Arsenal this season.

Can they make it four from four?

Standard Sport prediction

14:29 , Matt Verri

Regardless of the result, this match will be required viewing for any football fan given its implications for the top-five race.

Newcastle are arguably on better form, having beaten Chelsea last time out, barely breaking a sweat as they did so, whereas the Gunners were frustrated on Merseyside.

Declan Rice and Thomas Partey will have their hands full in midfield, facing up to the imposing physical combination of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

Newcastle have enjoyed their matches against the Gunners this season and could get another result here.

Draw, 1-1.

Newcastle team news

14:23 , Matt Verri

Sven Botman is a doubt for Newcastle after he was hooked at halftime in last weekend’s home win over Chelsea with what Eddie Howe described as a minor knee issue.

Joe Willock and Kieran Trippier are set to miss out with minor injuries, though Brazilian midfielder Joelinton could return. He faces a late fitness test as he returns from a knee injury.

Matt Targett (hamstring) and Lewis Hall (ankle) are both through the end of the season.

Arsenal team news

14:14 , Matt Verri

Kai Havertz could make his Arsenal return this afternoon.

Havertz was initially predicted to miss the rest of the season with the hamstring injury he suffered in Dubai in February, but the German has recovered quicker than expected.

“He has done certain parts of the sessions in the past two days,” the Arsenal boss said of Havertz on Friday. “He looks in great shape, but I think it is more a shout of, first of all the medical staff, the doctors, especially, giving the clearances - and then how Kai actually feels to contribute if he is required.”

Arsenal will definitely be without Mikel Merino as he is suspended following his red card against Liverpool last weekend.

Gabriel Magalhaes (hamstring), Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee) and Gabriel Jesus (knee) are all set to miss out, too.

Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber, Jorginho, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard are doubts.

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Raya; White, Saliba, Kiwior, Lewis-Skelly; Odegaard, Partey, Rice; Saka, Trossard, Martinelli
