Liverpool legend Graeme Souness says a fan who ran onto the pitch during Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Manchester United at the Emirates on Sunday should be banned for life.

The pitch invader made it onto the turf as Arsenal celebrated Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s penalty, which sealed the win after Granit Xhaka had opened the scoring in the first half.

As he ran across the field, the fan appeared to aim a push at United defender Chris Smalling. Arsenal announced after the match that a man had been arrested.

The incident came just hours after a Birmingham City fan had run onto the pitch and attacked Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish during their Midlands derby clash.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Souness called for tough action.

"Name him, shame him, ban him for life," Graeme Souness said on Sky Sports.

"Look at the mad things happening today. That's a village idiot wanting his 30 seconds.

"He's not interested in the club, he wants to look the big guy to his mates."

Arsenal's win moved them back into the top four, and put them within a point of rivals Tottenham in third.
