A clinical Liverpool beat Arsenal 2-0 to cut Manchester City’s once double-digit lead at the top of the Premier League table to a single point and keep the title race wide open.
Arsenal, who had won their last five league games, had largely dominated the first-half, but the game tipped decisively early in a frenetic second half as Liverpool extended their own league winning run to nine matches.
The breakthrough came just minutes after a misplaced backpass had almost gifted Arsenal a goal, when Diogo Jota was played through by Thiago and beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale at his near post. It came shortly after Alisson had brilliantly denied Martin Odegaard.
The result was effectively sewn up eight minutes later by Roberto Firmino who squeezed the ball under Ramsdale, after the Gunners had twice failed to clear the ball from their own box.
Arsenal will be hoping to get back on track on Saturday against Aston Villa as they remain in pole position for a top-four spot.
