Arsenal vs Everton LIVE: Max Dowman’s stunning cameo keeps Gunners’ Premier League title bid on track

Dowman became Arsenal’s youngest ever goalscorer as he tapped in the second - (AFP via Getty Images)

Max Dowman became Arsenal’s youngest ever goalscorer as he created one goal and then scored another to sink Everton in a 2-0 win at the Emirates.

The Gunner started well but it was the visitors who had the best chances of the first half, Dwight McNeil forcing a superb block from Riccardo Calafiori before hitting the post moments later.

Arsenal showed flashes of attacking flair and they were almost rewarded when Kai Havertz was brought down in the area after a great pass from Saka, but the appeal was waved away in controversial circumstances.

And the Gunners struggled to break down David Moyes’ side until Downman came off the bench and changed the game. The 16-year-old delivered a cross which goalkeeper Jordan Pickford missed, leading to a tap-in for Viktor Gyokores on 89 minutes.

And Dowman finished it off with the last kick of the game, skipping past Mykolenko in his own half and then beating Dewsbury-Hall before racing clear to score into an empty goal after Pickford had gone up for a corner.

It gave Arsenal a 10-point lead at the top of the table before Manchester City’s match at West Ham later on Saturday evening.

Max Dowman makes history as Arsenal grab late win to maintain title charge

20:42 , Chris Wilson

Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history as he sealed Arsenal’s last-gasp 2-0 victory over Everton in stoppage time at the Emirates Stadium to take them one step closer to a first Premier League title in 22 years.

The hosts dominated the beginning of the contest, but it was the Toffees who had created the better chances by the halfway point, including a woodwork-rattling attempt by Dwight McNeil.

'This is the best opportunity' for Arsenal

20:35 , Chris Wilson

Redknapp thinks this is Arsenal’s best chance to win the title now.

"It's credit to Mikel Arteta that they are in the position they are now,” he explains.

"This is the best opportunity [to win the title] because Man City haven't been as strong as they have been previously.

"But they are going to make Arsenal work hard. There's no forgone conclusion just yet, but they are in a fantastic position."

‘Magical’ Max Dowman becomes youngest ever Premier League goalscorer in crunch Arsenal win over Everton

20:27 , Chris Wilson

Arsenal midfielder Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history after a stunning solo effort sealed the Gunners’ win over Everton on Saturday night.

The England youth international wrapped up a potentially pivotal Arsenal win with nearly the last kick of the game to take the Gunners 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League, and at 16 years and 73 days, he becomes the youngest scorer in league history ahead of former Everton player James Vaughan.

The impact the finishers are having this season is remarkable'

20:21 , Chris Wilson

"The impact the finishers are having this season is remarkable. Everybody is important and adding to the team,” continued Arteta.

"There are times when we have to patient because with all the dominance and the amount of shots we have when we don't score, the anxiety is building.

"You have to stay composed, be relentless in your desire to win the game and make something happen. The team had the spirit today."

On Gyokeres, he adds: "He does so many good things for the team and today he scored a massive goal - he had to be in the right moment, in the right spot and he certainly was to help us win the game."

Arteta on Dowman

20:15 , Chris Wilson

Here’s what Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had to say on Dowman and his role in the win:

“It was a great moment, especially with the way the goal built up. We had 10 or 15 seconds to really enjoy what was about to happen.

"It was magical, all the bench and players together jumping up with the crowd, it was a beautiful day.

"He changed the game every time he got the ball. He made things happen and we looked like more of a threat. To do it at that age, in this context, with the pressure and expectations to win the game, it's just not normal.

"It's natural for him. He doesn't feel the pressure - that's the best thing. He does what he feels and when you have such a talent, I'm sure good things are going to happen,” he added.

More from Redknapp

20:03 , Chris Wilson

"I've not won a title but I know how to lose one. The anxiety just comes on you and transfers to the fans,” continues Redknapp.

"Mikel Arteta looked like cat on a hot tin roof. The anxiety was getting to him.

"Dowman came on and was just like, 'it's ok, I am here. I am going to take care of this.

"That was the difference in the game. It was incredible how he kept his nerve and didn't let anything affect him because others were letting it affect them."

Premier League table

That result leaves Arsenal 10 points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

City have two games in hand over the Gunners, one of which comes in a few minutes as they take on West Ham at the London Stadium.

More from Redknapp on Dowman

19:54 , Chris Wilson

"The pace and the power that he possesses, he can transfer the ball from right foot to left foot. He is just so calm,” adds Jamie Redknapp on Max Dowman.

"There is a swagger about this guy that I haven't seen with many footballers.

"I remember seeing Steven Gerrard at 16 or 17, and being blown away by his talent.

"Coming on at 16 and changing a Premier League game of this magnitude, because you have to put it into context, if Arsenal don't win today this swings it massively into City's favour.

"Dowman changed everything when he came on,” he added.

Dowman 'changed the game'

19:51 , Chris Wilson

“The creativity of Max Dowman...he created the first goal – he changed the game when he came on. That last moment when he ran the length of the pitch is absolutely phenomenal. That will be remembered with many, many years to come,” says Pat Nevin on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Redknapp on Dowman

“He hasnt even done his GSCEs and he is doing things like that and making the game look easy,” says Jamie Redknapp on Max Dowman.

"I would like to say I am surprised, but I have seen that little boy since he was 7. I remember watching him and thinking, 'you have got something different'.

“I promise you, Arsenal were not going to win the game until he came on.

“They were in quick sand. They had no energy, the crowd were on them. He changed the whole complexion of that game,” he added.

Gyokeres: Dowman is 'incredible'

19:37 , Chris Wilson

Viktor Gyokeres has this to say at full-time.

On Dowman: “It’s incredible, you can see how he plays, with no fear, and he’s in the right positions most of the time. He’s an amazing player, and I’m so happy.

On what the plan was, he says: “The plan that we talked about before the game, try and change the game and get the win.

“Every win is important, we try to do our best in our games and we’re in a good position.

“Come into games with the right attitude, together with a good atmosphere, I think we can achieve anything,” he added.

It’s been a good watch for the neutral at the Emirates, with both sides having chances, McNeil hitting the post, Calafiori producing a brilliant goal-saving block and Havertz having a solid penalty shout waved away!

While Everton had the best two chances of the half, Arsenal have not played badly, and this is not the type of showing that will subject to the same gripes as Fabian Hurzeler and others have voiced in recent weeks.

However, the Gunners have just lacked that last bit of quality in the final third, as have the visitors at some points.

The secret Guardiola ambition that could see Man City unravel in major Arsenal boost

16:40 , Chris Wilson

If Pep Guardiola was understandably deflated after another bad defeat at Real Madrid, it was actually all the more acute because of the game immediately before.

There’s a belief around Manchester City that the Catalan was unusually emboldened by the FA Cup victory over Newcastle United. The team had recently seen a revival of their attacking play through an aggressive formation that involved Antoine Semenyo tucking in while the full-backs offered the width, with Rodri pinning everything together. Modified for the cup game at St James’ Park, City produced what was probably their most complete performance in months.

Team news

The line-ups will be released in the next hour or so, so here’s a reminder of the early team news for both sides...

Mikel Merino is absent with a foot injury for the hosts Arsenal, who may also be without Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard.

The pair missed the Leverkusen tie and remain doubts for the weekend, but Arteta received a boost in defence as Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori both recovered from knocks to make the bench and are fit to feature at the Emirates.

Everton are without Jack Grealish and Carlos Alcaraz but should have a full-strength squad otherwise, with Seamus Coleman expected to recover from a minor issue.

Arteta on set-pieces and goals in the Premier League

16:00 , Chris Wilson

Here’s what Mikel Arteta had to say during his press conference, when asked about corners and long throws:

"That's where there are rules. If we don't want to see long throws it's very simple, give four seconds for the long throws if you need. The biggest problem is the man-to-man. If all managers agree you cannot defend the man-to-man tomorrow you're going to have a different league. I guarantee you a different league."

When asked why only six Premier League games this season have been won by four or more goals, he added: "This is the reality and if you don't want to see it, it's because probably we have to change the glasses of the perspective that we see the game because this is the reality of our league right now."

Moyes on Arsenal

"No, I don't think they'll be fearing us because of the level of the player, but I hope that they will give us the respect which we deserve because we have been performing well enough,” said David Moyes when asked whether Arsenal will fear his side and their away record.

On Arsenal’s set-pieces, he adds: "It's part of the game. And if there's this thing out there where everybody has to play the beautiful game and everything has to be perfect, well, if we all done that it would be boring. Football would be boring."

Everton manager David Moyes has defended "unbelievable" Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta from some of the criticism his style of play has received.

Despite leading the Premier League and finishing top of the Champions League group stage, the Gunners boss has come under scrutiny for their over-reliance on set-pieces and lack of exciting football.

Moyes, who signed Arteta as a player in his first spell with the Toffees, does not understand the backlash.

Mikel Arteta makes peace with Fabian Hurzeler after Arsenal time-wasting jibe

Mikel Arteta insisted he and Fabian Hurzeler were on good terms after the Brighton boss reached out to clear up his critical comments about Arsenal’s style of play.

Hurzeler accused the Gunners of “making their own rules” following last week’s 1-0 loss to the Premier League leaders and on Friday revealed he had exchanged texts with Arteta, telling the Spaniard he had “huge respect” for the Arsenal boss and everyone at the club.

Arteta refused to reveal the details of their exchange and doubled down in his defence of their approach ahead of Saturday’s top-flight meeting with Everton.

Arsenal will be hoping for a return to usual fare as they host Everton in the Premier League a few days after a chastening Champions League draw to Bayer Leverkusen.

Mikel Arteta’s side were undone by their own weapon of choice, the well-executed set-piece, on Wednesday and needed a late Kai Havertz penalty to avoid an unexpected defeat on a night in which several of the Premier League’s top teams came unstuck in Europe.

In the top flight however they are on safer ground and will bid to extend their seven-point lead at the top of the table against David Moyes’ Toffees, who ran out 2-0 winners over struggling Burnley last time out.

Everton themselves are pushing for a European place and sit one point off seventh-placed Brentford, so will hope to continue their fine away record and get revenge for their 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture earlier this term.
