Arsenal vs Crystal Palace LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction after penalty shootout

LIVE: Arsenal vs Crystal Palace - (AFP via Getty Images)

Arsenal vs Crystal Palace LIVE

Arsenal will face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final after beating Crystal Palace on penalties at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. The last Carabao Cup quarter-final tie had to be rearranged for two days before Christmas due to Crystal Palace’s Europa Conference League commitments last week.

A London derby that presented chances for both sides looked to be settled by an own goal as Maxence Lacroix had the misfortune of turning the ball into his own net after Palace failed to deal with a Bukayo Saka corner. However, Marc Guehi equalised in injury time to send the tie into penalties where Kepa Arrizabalaga was the hero for Arsenal as he saved from Maxence Lacroix to secure an 8-7 win.

This result means Mikel Arteta’s side have reached the Carabao Cup semi-final in back-to-back seasons, though they will hope for a better experience 12 months on having been beaten comfortably by Newcastle across two legs.Follow Arsenal vs Crystal Palace back below with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Sam Tabuteau at the Emirates Stadium!

61 min: What a complete transformation this has been from Palace. They look the more likely to score. Not many would have predicted that at half-time!

Kepa takes a risk by not claiming Lerma’s long throw at the first attempt. Nearly an own goal.

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

21:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

The game has been drifting and Palace fire a warning shot. Arteta will hope this sparks his side back to life.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

58 min: Wharton is afforded far too much space and he takes up the invitation to shoot but drags his effort wide of the post.

Arsenal change follows as Trossard replaces Martinelli.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

21:18 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

57 min: Arsenal spark into action down the right as Madueke’s cross finds Eze at the back post but his shot is blocked by Clyne. Handball appeals follow but waved away by the referee.

No VAR tonight.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

21:16 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

55 min: Fair to say Crystal Palace have been the better side in the opening ten minutes of the second half. Arsenal, yet to get going again, and have had their sloppy moments in possession.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

21:14 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

53 min: Arsenal want a foul after Calafiori goes to ground after attempting to shield the ball away from Mateta. A Crystal Palace corner is awarded instead and Pino makes a complete mess of it, firing the ball straight into the side netting.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

21:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

51 min: Better this from Palace at the start of the second half. Not only do they look more threatening going forward, they are winning far more second balls.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

47 min: After the way the first-half went, you do wonder if Arsenal will be made to rue all of those missed chances.

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

21:06 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Martinelli is back out and running around as though nothing has happened.

Bit of deep heat seems to have done the job.

KICK-OFF!

21:06 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Back underway in north London.

Oliver Glasner has turned to his bench bringing on Devenny and Clyne for Nketiah and Canvot.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

21:02 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

More injury concerns for Arsenal as a clash of knees towards the end of the first half left Gabriel Martinelli struggling.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:57 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

It’s goalless at the break but that is largely down to Walter Benitez. This is quite comfortably his best save of the half.

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

20:52 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Martinelli was moving gingerly there as the half-time whistle blew. Interesting to see if he comes back out for the second half.

HALF-TIME

20:51 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

Gunners have been dominant but Walter Benitez has been superb for Crystal Palace.

The keeper has made a brilliant save to keep out a header from Gabriel Jesus and twice denied Noni Madueke.

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

20:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Martinelli is down after a clash of knees. It is a cold night so that one will hurt. He should be able to run it off, though.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+2 min: Knee on knee involving Martinelli and Canvot, and the Arsenal star comes off worse.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:46 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45 min: Arsenal go from back to front in a flash but Timber’s cross is a touch too strong and Lewis-Skelly’s shot is eventually blocked after he was teed up by Martinelli.

Into two minutes of added time.

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

20:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

That is delightful from Martinelli, he has made a mockery of Canvot there.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

42 min: It’s one way traffic at the moment as Timber has a volley blocked before Benitez dives on the ball to prevent Palace from conceding a corner.

Martinelli ties Canvot up in knots, picks out Timber who heads over.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

40 min: Stuart Atwell has a quiet word with Arteta after the Arsenal manager reacted to a quick free-kick attempt being called back.

Gunners do keep the pressure on and Madueke is denied by Benitez once again.

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

20:37 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal still on top but they haven't quite got the same energy to their play.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

34 min: Superb pass from Merino into Eze who finds Jesus but his first touch lets him down and the chance goes begging as Richards comes across to make the clearance.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:33 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

33 min: Palace, finally, show some signs of life in attack as the ball breaks for Mateta and he moves it on for Nketiah who drives in an attempt which is blocked.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:31 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

31 min: Lerma receives a bit of treatment and that has resulted in a delay. Palace won’t mind that as they’ve been under the cosh since the start of the game.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:28 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

28 min: Lovely bit of wing play from Martinelli and he stands a cross up but Madueke can’t connect before the ball is turned behind for a corner from which Calafiori shoots over from close range.

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

20:26 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

How has that not gone in? Arsenal are knocking on the door. You can tell cause the steward keeps telling supporters to sit down.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

25 min: Benitez, at full stretch, denies Jesusa goal with a superb save. The Palace goalkeeper got down very quickly and clawed the ball away right on the line!

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

20:23 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Madueke has looked lively so far, it is a good save from Benitez.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

22 min: Martinelli lifts the ball over the Palace defence for Madueke who takes a touch before firing at goal but Benitez races off his line to make an important save and Jesus can’t turn home the rebound.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:21 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

20 min: Timber is caught in possession by Pino who gives the ball to Mateta but his run his halted by a superb tackle from countryman Saliba.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

18 min: Was that an elbow? Pino goes down holding his face, he was certainly caught by Madueke but it wasn’t intentional.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:14 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

14 min: Eze’s corner causes chaos in the box, a few appeals for handball follows before Martinelli smashes an effort well wide.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:13 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

13 min: Martinelli takes on Canvot and gets the better of the Palace defender on the outside and his cross is cleared for a corner.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:12 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

12 min: Good defending from Palace to cut out Eze’s attempted pass for Jesus. The visitors then build down the left with Mitchell but he is forced back after Arsenal regroup quickly.

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

20:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Tyrick Mitchell is probably the last player Glasner wanted in that position.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:07 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

7 min: Calafiori with a ball over the top looking for the run of Martinelli but the pass was overhit. At the other end, Mitchell finds himself in acres of space but fires over the bar.

Sam Tabuteau at Emirates Stadium

20:04 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A fast start and Arsenal should really have the lead. Madueke's effort was tame.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:04 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

3 min: First chance of the game goes Arsenal’s way as Martinelli feeds Madueke through the middle but the winger sends a rather tame effort straight at Benitez.

Arsenal 0-0 Crystal Palace

20:02 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

2 min: As expected, it’s Calafiori at centre-back for Arsenal with Lewis-Skelly at left-back. Did wonder if Arteta would opt for Norgaard in defence as he did against Club Brugge a couple of weeks ago.

KICK-OFF!

20:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

We are underway in north London.

Chelsea are awaiting the winners in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Why Arsenal vs Crystal Palace is tonight

19:58 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

This match is being played tonight instead of last week - the original scheduled dates for this season’s Carabao Cup quarter-final ties.

The reason for this is due to Crystal Palace’s fixture schedule as Arsenal had lobbied for the game to be played on Tuesday, December 16, but that would have forced Oliver Glasner’s side to play three games in the space of five days.

Rooney reveals hidden reason Arsenal star is better than people think

19:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Wayne Rooney has defended Viktor Gyokeres' performances for Arsenal, insisting the striker is doing more for the team than people realise.

Gyokeres scored Arsenal's only goal in the 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday, emphatically converting a penalty for his first goal since the start of November.

That took Gyokeres to five Premier League goals for the season, with the 27-year-old yet to regularly produce his best form for the Gunners.

There were signs he was settling in a couple of months ago but a hamstring injury halted his momentum and Gyokeres has been quiet since returning to the side.

However, while the goals have not regularly flowed, Rooney praised what the striker brings to the Arsenal team.

Arsenal have reasons for optimism in title race

19:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

The more superstitious among Arsenal fans can be forgiven for going to bed on Saturday night with mixed feelings, writes Matt Verri.

They had just watched Viktor Gyokeres' penalty earn a 1-0 win over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, giving the striker his first goal since November.

The good news was that those three points moved Arsenal back above Manchester City and to the top of the Premier League table, where they will sit on Christmas Day.

The bad news? That Arsenal will sit top of the table on Christmas Day.

Glasner on fixture congestion

18:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner insists he will not be complaining if his side progress to the Carabao Cup semi-final and add two more fixtures to their already packed fixture schedule.

He said: "We are in four competitions, and we want these games. We want this amount of games, and it's not to complain about it. "And it's the same, we want to win.

"That would mean at least two more games in the Carabao Cup. The players don't tell me that they want to lose because they want to save these two games in January and February – so we will go to win it."

Mikel Arteta drops major Arsenal selection hint for Carabao Cup clash

18:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta has suggested he is ready to unleash Gabriel Jesus on Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup.

The Brazilian has not started a match since January, when he suffered an ACL injury, but has looked bright in three recent cameos off the bench.

Arsenal host Palace on Tuesday night with a semi-final tie against Chelsea the prize on offer.

Asked if Jesus was ready to start in the last-eight clash, Arteta responded firmly: "Yes, he is. You can see now, not only on games, every day in training how much he wants it. He's going to deserve a chance soon."

Jesus has good memories of taking on Palace, having scored five times in the space of a week against them last season.
