Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid LIVE: Champions League result, latest updates and reaction after emphatic win

Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid - LIVE

Arsenal maintained their 100 per cent winning start in this season’s Champions League with an emphatic victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night. Gabriel nodded Arsenal in front from a set-piece just before the hour mark and Gabriel Martinelli kept up his record of scoring in every Champions League fixture so far this season.

Viktor Gyokeres ended his goal drought by scoring twice in quick succession as Mikel Arteta’s side made it three wins from three in the League Phase. The Gunners now turn their attention to Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend, while Atletico have now lost twice in the competition already and are still without an away win across all competitions.

Diego Simeone’s side almost broke the deadlock either side of the break, but Giuliano Simeone couldn’t capitalise on a gift from David Raya and former Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez saw a brilliant effort come back off the crossbar. Follow the game back below with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium!

Odegaard injury update

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard says he is recovering well from his knee injury - but it is “tricky” to set a comeback date.

The midfielder has been out of action ever since, missing Norway’s games over the recent international break.

Odegaard was also absent for Arsenal’s win against Fulham last weekend, and is unsure when he will return.

Arsenal have apologised to Atletico Madrid after the Spanish club had no hot water in their dressing room at Emirates Stadium following training on Monday night.

Atletico trained at the Emirates ahead of their Champions League clash with Arsenal on Tuesday night.

Diego Simeone’s side, however, were forced to return to their hotel after the session and shower there because there was no hot water in the dressing rooms at the Emirates.

Arsenal set for toughest test

19:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal have already endured a brutal start to the season, with trips to Anfield, St James’ Park and Old Trafford - plus a home clash with Manchester City - already behind them.

But Tuesday’s showdown with Atletico Madrid could prove to be their toughest test yet, primarily because of the similarities between the two teams.

Few sides in world football can match Arsenal’s defensive steel and physical edge, but Atletico are one of them.

Simeone warning for Arsenal

18:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Diego Simeone has promised to inflict “damage” on Arsenal’s Champions League campaign.

While the Atletico Madrid boss has been full of praise for the job Mikel Arteta has done at the Emirates Stadium, he says he is looking for ways to get a victory.

He said: “They've been with Arteta for five or six years, with a clear identity that they won't compromise on.

"On the contrary, they're improving it, bringing in great players for the positions where they believe they can continue to grow with that same idea. They compete in every Premier League until the end, with merits that weren't always theirs, but they clearly reflect their identity.

“We'll have to take the game to where we believe we can do damage. It's a wonderful stadium, with a driving crowd and a surely high pace.”

Arteta hails Simeone

18:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta has hailed Diego Simone as someone he looks up to and believes the Atletico Madrid boss would be a success in the Premier League.

Arteta will face Simeone for the first time during his managerial career tonight when Arsenal host Atletico.

Simeone is an inspiration for Arteta due to his remarkable stint at Atletico, which stretches back 14 years.

“Well, obviously [he] is someone that I look up to and learn from in many situations and what is for me outstanding is his passion,” said Arteta.

Merino backs Gyokeres

18:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino says it is a “matter of time” before Viktor Gyokeres ends his goal drought.

Gyokeres drew a blank in the 1-0 win at Fulham last Saturday and has now gone nine games without finding the net for club or country.

Merino, however, has praised the Swede’s work off the ball and believes he has played a key role in Arsenal climbing to the top of the Premier League.

The Spaniard is convinced that hard work will pay off for Gyokeres and the goals will start to flow.

Atletico announce travelling squad

Julian Alvarez, Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak and Conor Gallagher are among the Atletico Madrid players to have made the trip to London.

Predicted Arsenal XI

18:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal have a tight turnaround from the Fulham game, but Mikel Arteta will want to name a strong team.

Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelly could come in at full-back, while Mikel Merino is an option in midfield.

The most likely change is Gabriel Martinelli coming in on the left flank, although Leandro Trossard did score the winner at the weekend at Craven Cottage.

Viktor Gyokeres is set to lead the line again and he will be looking to end his goal drought. The striker has not scored in his last nine games for club and country.

Arsenal predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Eze, Zubimendi, Rice; Saka, Gyokeres, Martinelli

Score prediction

17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

This is unlikely to be a game full of goals, or even scintillating football. Two teams known more for their rearguard efforts than impressing at the other end of the pitch - even if Simeone’s side are not what they once were - we will likely be served up a game for the purists.

Arsenal will need more from an underwhelming Viktor Gyokeres, but their threats were elsewhere will keep Jan Oblak & Co. plenty busy.

Arsenal to win, 2-1.

Atletico Madrid team news: Gonzalez fit

17:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Atletico have named Nico Gonzalez in their travelling party despite the left wing-back being forced off with a head injury during the first half of the win over Osasuna on Saturday.

Clement Lenglet, formerly of Tottenham and Aston Villa, is available again following suspension.

Arsenal team news: Hincapie available

17:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Piero Hincapie has overcome a troublesome groin injury to make a return to training, though the defender is unlikely to play any significant part due to the form of Arsenal's current back four.

Leandro Trossard scored the winner against Fulham at the weekend, and will hope to keep his place amid competition from Gabriel Martinelli who has scored in both Champions League games this season.
