Arsenal vs Athletic Bilbao live: Viktor Gyokeres gets off the mark as the Gunners end pre-season with victory

Arsenal beat Athletic Club in their final pre-season friendly with Mikel Arteta picking up momentum to inspire a Premier League title charge.

Viktor Gyokeres opened the scoring with his first goal for the Gunners since his £64m move from Sporting, latching onto a wonderful cross from fellow newcomer Martin Zubimendi to power a header past Unai Simon and show a glimpse of what might be to come this season.

Then just two minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead. Martin Odegaard dinked one over the top for Gabriel Martinelli to control, and with Simon in no man’s land, he slipped it right to Bukayo Saka who could roll into an empty net.

While the tempo dropped after the restart, Kai Havertz fired in late to seal the victory and end pre-season on a high ahead of next Sunday’s league opener against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The new season of the English top flight is fast approaching, and with that will come the long-awaited return of Fantasy Premier League.

As pre-season gives us a glimpse of potential top performers, many players will have already picked their squads for the opening gameweek of the 2025/26 campaign, though even at this stage, new signings and potential injuries might change things.

The usual suspects - your Erling Haalands and Mo Salahs of the world - will be among the most popular picks, with history dictating their unwavering ability to rack up points.

However, there are plenty of other players across the Premier League who might offer genuine value this season, from breakout stars to marquee new arrivals, with the potential of setting your team apart from the rest in your mini-league.

Here are 30 players we think might be solid additions to your FPL side:

Arsenal lift the coveted Emirates Cup

Arsenal’s players hold aloft the prestigious Emirates Cup to see out their pre-season.

Seeing how Audi Cup haunted Tottenham for so many years, the Gunners will hope that isn’t the last piece of silverware they win this season.

Mikel Arteta’s team are currently doing one last lap of honour, thanking the fans before delving into the proper campaign, which begins next weekend at Old Trafford.

ARSENAL WIN THE SHOOTOUT! Arsenal 6-5 Athletic Bilbao

Zubimendi with a well-placed spot-kick to draw an end to that pointless exercise.

Muted celebrations would put it kindly, zero care from the Spaniard would be more accurate.

I do not understand the incessant need for pre-season shootouts, but I digress. Arsenal win.

Boiro... SAVED BY RAYA!

Madueke’s turn. “He looks a bit nervous,” says the commentator. If you can’t handle this occasion, you can’t handle any.

Arsenal beat Athletic Club in their final pre-season friendly with Mikel Arteta picking up momentum to perhaps inspire a Premier League title charge.

The big story of the day saw Viktor Gyokeres get off the mark for his new club before Bukayo Saka and later Kai Havertz added to the Gunners’ advantage.

But it’s not all over. Arsenal have already won the coveted Emirates Cup with this victory, but there’ll nevertheless be a penalty shootout with nothing on the line.

The stakes could literally not be lower. But please stick around! Where are you going?

Arsenal 3-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:48 , Will Castle

90 mins: Sorry, it won’t be the final act of pre-season. We’ve still got an absolutely pointless penalty shootout to come.

Arsenal 3-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:47 , Will Castle

89 mins: Saka chases a ball over the top but gets caught in two minds with Unai Simon out of position, his legs getting tied up as the chance goes.

Likely the final act of the game and of pre-season.

Arsenal 3-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:45 , Will Castle

88 mins: Closing in on the 90. This has been the perfect way for Arsenal to ramp up momentum going into the new season.

Arsenal 3-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:44 , Will Castle

85 mins: Friendly fire as White boots the ball into Saka’s face. Good job they like each other, with both walking away in chuckles.

There are also a couple more Arsenal changes to note - Rice and Odegaard off, Merino and Nwaneri on.

GOAL! Arsenal 3-0 Athletic Bilbao (Havertz, 82')

18:42 , Will Castle

Just to remind you that Gyokeres isn’t the only potent striker at Arsenal’s disposal!

Chasing an over-the-top ball, Havertz charges towards goal with two Bilbao bodies on his tail, but holds off the pressure to fire brilliantly across goal past Unai Simon.

That’s three!

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:39 , Will Castle

81 mins: Not sure whether to lambast or praise Declan Rice there!

It was an absolutely dire attempt at a short corner, just rolling it to an Athletic body to spark a needless counter attack.

But the midfielder manages to single-handedly clean up his own mess, sprinting back to dispossess the charging attacker and quell the threat to Raya’s clean sheet.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:37 , Will Castle

80 mins: Nice to see a half-decent chance arise. The tempo has died down since the subs have come on.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:36 , Will Castle

78 mins: SAVE! Best bit of play for a while from the Gunners.

A low delivery causes carnage for Bilbao, and with the ball on the byline, Zubimendi does brilliantly to chop it across goal and into the path of Havertz.

The German fires in goalwards but Unai Simon gets his body in the way.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:30 , Will Castle

72 mins: Little revenge mission from Berenguer who leaves one on Lewis-Skelly following their altercation a couple of minutes prior.

Feisty for a friendly.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:28 , Will Castle

70 mins: That’s all she wrote for Viktor Gyokeres, who gets a standing ovation as he is subbed for Kai Havertz.

Off the mark for the Gunners.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:27 , Will Castle

69 mins: Just as I say that, Lewis-Skelly sees yellow for a deliberate trip on Berenguer. No more leniency from the ref.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:25 , Will Castle

67 mins: Cynical challenge from White escapes a booking - seems the referee has loosened up since dishing out a yellow to Yuri after 65 seconds.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:23 , Will Castle

64 mins: A host of substitutions to make a note of on both sides.

For Arsenal, it’s a double defensive change - new boy Mosquera and Lewis-Skelly enter the fray in place of Timber and Gabriel.

And for Athletic, Gurezeta, Gorosabel and Boiro come in for Areso, Nico Williams and Yuri Berchiche.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:20 , Will Castle

62 mins: OFF THE POST! So close to a second for Gyokeres!

The Swede is showing off his aerial prowess this afternoon as he goes for a diving header off of Madueke’s cross, only to see his effort ricochet off the woodwork.

It looks like Unai Simon got a crucial touch on that.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:18 , Will Castle

60 mins: The Emirates calls for a foul as Declan Rice goes down on the edge of the box, having picked the ball up from a Gyokeres flick.

The Arsenal faithful boo, but they can’t claim they’ve been wronged there. Rice just loses his balance and the ref is having none of it.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:16 , Will Castle

58 mins: A rare moment of possession for Athletic in the Arsenal half as they try and work a way back into the game.

But it’s wasted by Berenguer whose delivery from central goes over everyone and through to Raya to easily claim.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:13 , Will Castle

56 mins: Arsenal peppering the Bilbao box with crosses, but currently no-one in red or white can find the finishing touch.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:12 , Will Castle

53 mins: CHANCE! The resulting corner is nodded back across goal, where Timber leaps to try and force it into the net.

However, it’s just too high for him and he ends up getting under it, with the ball looping over and onto the roof of the net.

If the Dutchman left it, that may have been a simple tap in for Gyokeres, who was standing behind him.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:10 , Will Castle

52 mins: Madueke involved once again as he drives down the left towards the byline before hooking it across. He can’t give the lift on the delivery, allowing Athletic to divert away from a corner.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:06 , Will Castle

47 mins: White and Madueke both get straight into the action as Arsenal look to pick up from where they left off.

White darts into the box on the overlap but runs the ball out of play.

Athletic have also made a double change, for the record. Sannadi and Vesga on for Inaki Williams and De Galarreta.

BACK UNDERWAY! Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

18:03 , Will Castle

Here we go again - just 45 minutes of pre-season to go for the Gunners!

A couple Arsenal changes to make a note of, with Madueke and White entering the fray in place of Martinelli and Calafiori.

Who do you want Mikel Arteta to bring on?

18:00 , Will Castle

It’s all gone to plan for Arsenal so far, which should allow Mikel Arteta to make a multitude of changes in the second half, allowing a run-out for as many as possible.

Could we be seeing the likes of Noni Madueke, Ethan Nwaneri or Cristhian Mosquera after the restart?

We’ll find out shortly - the second half is next!

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:46 , Will Castle

44 mins: Maybe one last set play for Arsenal as Rice whips in a corner - this time it’s cleared by Athletic.

It goes all the way back to Raya on the halfway line, who the Arsenal fans urge to shoot. They’ve seen a Gyokeres goal, now they want anyone and everyone on the scoresheet.

Arsenal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:43 , Will Castle

42 mins: Not long until the break, and it can’t come soon enough for Athletic Bilbao.

Arsenal took a while to click into gear, but they’re fully in the mood now. And Bilbao cannot get out of their own half.

Two in the blink of an eye!

Odegaard dinks Martinelli in behind, and with Unai Simon in no man’s land, he slips to his right to allow Saka to role into an empty net.

Athletic Bilbao are being cut open.

17:37 , Will Castle

That’s what Arsenal fans wanted to see - Viktor Gyokeres is off the mark at the Emirates!

After Rice’s initial corner goes through everyone, the second delivery is met by the big Swede, who thumps a header past Unai Simon.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:35 , Will Castle

34 mins: For a second, that looked like it was going to be an own goal for the ages.

Odegaard tries slipping Saka through with a straight pass, and Yuri comes across to clear - but instead of clearing out of danger, he nearly shins it into his own top corner from the edge of the box!

It goes over, sparing his blushes. Corner to come.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:32 , Will Castle

31 mins: Good play from Arsenal as Martinelli releases Gyokeres into the box, who lays it back to Calafiori.

The Italian side-foots it but gets under the ball, with his effort clearing the bar.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:31 , Will Castle

30 mins: Rice’s resulting corner hits the crossbar, albeit the back of the bar - more of a waste than a close call.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:30 , Will Castle

28 mins: Calafiori is clipped by Vivian, giving Arsenal a free-kick opportunity from the left-hand side.

It’s an in-swinger from Rice but a Bilbao head gets there first. Rice will have another chance to deliver from the corner.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:25 , Will Castle

24 mins: Water break in session as Unai Gomez receives treatment for an injury.

It becomes apparent he won’t be able to continue and is replaced by Navarro.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:22 , Will Castle

21 mins: CHANCE! You expect Gyokeres to put them away!

It’s great combination play between Saka and Zubimendi, with the former breaking for the byline between pulling it back towards the Swede.

He doesn’t connect properly, however, as the ball spins up off the turf and into the hands of Simon.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:18 , Will Castle

17 mins: CHANCE! Big let-off for Arsenal!

Calafiori tries to play out from the back but gives it straight to a Bilbao body inside his own area, but the resulting shot lacks conviction and is comfortably saved by Raya.

The Italian’s blushes are spared.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:17 , Will Castle

15 mins: Arsenal are having a lot of possession around the box, with it this time Timber trying to puncture Bilbao’s defensive resolve.

The Spanish side hold off the Dutchman’s advances who, on the stretch, will need to be careful given his history of muscular injuries.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:14 , Will Castle

13 mins: More warning signs blaring for Bilbao whenever Saka gets on the ball.

He skips past his man on the right and gets to the byline, firing a ball across with Gyokeres in his sights.

An Athletic body gets in the way to concede a corner, which is collected by Unai Simon.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:13 , Will Castle

11 mins: Shaky moment as Timber gives the ball away, allowing Bilbao to break into the box and get their first shot of the game away. Straight down the throat of Raya, no trouble.

Up the other end, it’s Athletic’s turn to be dispossessed in a dangerous position, with Martinelli driving into the box. He puts his laces through it but hits the side-netting.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:10 , Will Castle

7 mins: Lovely stuff from Saka as he finds himself in the box on the right. He darts past Lekue with ease before having a shot that is well saved.

Lively start from the winger.

Arsenal 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

17:09 , Will Castle

5 mins: Quiet first few minutes, barring the early yellow card handed to Yuri for bringing down Gyokeres.

Every time the Swede gets the ball, you can hear the anticipation in the Emirates.

Underwhelming Viktor Gyokeres debut shows why Arsenal need him so much

16:50 , Richard Jolly

A debut defeat and an outing that was underwhelming but left the sense he was underused may matter little. When it comes to competitive games, Viktor Gyokeres’s Arsenal bow will come at Old Trafford against Manchester United on 17 August. But as he donned their No 14 shirt for the first time in a game, Arsenal at least showed the need for Gyokeres, the forward who scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting CP.

The first north London derby staged outside the United Kingdom yielded a 1-0 loss to Tottenham, with Arsenal registering a lone shot on target, which Kai Havertz directed at Guglielmo Vicario. Gyokeres was limited to the last 20 minutes, including stoppage time, as Arsenal were largely toothless.

Arsenal tricky start

16:45 , Mike Jones

Mikel Arteta has picked a strong line-up for today’s match and will be hoping to get some fine tuning in for his starters as Arsenal have a difficult start to the season.

These are their first five fixtures:

Manchester United (A)

Leeds United (H)

Liverpool (A)

Nottingham Forest (H)

Manchester City (A)

Should they win all of those they’ll be sitting pretty in the Premier League but the risk of disaster after five weeks is also high.

A historic meeting

16:40 , Mike Jones

This game will make history as it is the first time Arsenal have faced Athletic Club.

They have played numerous La Liga sides in pre-season, with the first coming against Valencia in 1966 before facing Barcelona in 1973.

16:35 , Mike Jones

The youngster revealed: “Signing this contract means everything to me.

“ I see this as my first real season in men’s senior football, as part of the squad in the changing room.

“I'm so excited for what I can bring to the team, I want to help us win as much as possible and bring happiness and glory to the club. This is where I feel at home.”

Arsenal attacking midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has signed a new five-year contract which runs until 2030.

The 18-year-old scored nine goals in 37 appearances last term during his breakthrough season with the Gunners.

Arsenal entertain Athletic Bilbao in their final pre-season friendly before the start of the Premier League next season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have struggle in pre-season, suffering back-to-back defeats to Tottenham and Villarreal, with the Basque side likely to reveal how ready the Gunners are to challenge champions Liverpool for the title.

Arteta is desperate to guide Arsenal over the line in the title race, with the hope that their new signings will position them well to dethrone Liverpool. “I think we've done that in the last three years and that's the next step,” Arteta said after defeat to Villarreal. “We know what it is and we're going to be better. It's like any other team when you look at the competition, the pieces of the puzzle that they've added. They're big ones as well so we're all trying to be at our best.”

Finding the right balance with a new midfield will also be key, as Martin Zubimendi takes a leading role alongside Declan Rice, with Saturday’s friendly likely to show us how quickly this Arsenal side can start the new campaign next week.

Hello and welcome to the Independent’s coverage of Arsenal’s final pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao.

The Gunners have struggled in recent weeks with a north London derby defeat to Tottenham in Hong Kong and then a 3-2 loss at home to Villarreal.

Viktor Gyokeres will hope to break his duck in red before next week’s Premier League opener and the Basque side should provide a good test for Mikel Arteta’s outfit just days out from the start of the new campaign.
