Arsenal 2-0 Watford, Manchester City 2-0 Brighton and more – as it happened

Here’s what happened in Scotland today ...

Right, that is me done for the day. The 3pm kick-offs were not particularly dramatic, which means that surely all of the fun has been saved for Chelsea v Liverpool.

Speaking of which, join Rob Smyth for the game.

Manchester City are top of the league, as Jamie Jackson reports.

Oh Newcastle. Louise Taylor brings you the report.

Paul Doyle has all you need to know from Wolves against Southampton.

Over in Catalonia, the Barcelona lads were held 1-1 at home by Athletic Bilbao, with the hosts only saved by a goal from the lesser-spotted Munir, after De Marcos gave the Basques a lead just before the break.

Guardiola says Aguero has some foot problems, which might explain why he keeps withdrawing him after about an hour in every game he plays.

For Championship football fans: Stuart James was watching Swansea today. He offers a brief summary of Swansea’s victory.

Andy Hunter attended the Gylfi Sigurdsson Show at Goodison. Read all about it.

Harry Kane says things were tough at Huddersfield today, claiming the pitch was a touch dry, which is not ideal for slick football although he does think they should have finished the game off earlier.

Now he’s chucking out some cliches about why Spurs had a little dip in form but nothing to write home about.

Paul Wilson was the man watching Huddersfield lose to Spurs. Here is his report:

Amy Lawrence was at the Emirates today. Read her report from Arsenal’s victory over Watford.

Manchester United are down in 10th following their defeat at West Ham earlier today, which will leave a sour taste in Mourinho’s mouth. They were pretty awful today and he might have to start worrying about his position if things don’t pick up.

There was a little worry late on in the Spurs game as Kane went down injured following a Jorgensen challenge but he got up quickly enough for Pochettino not to show too much concern as his captain walked off the pitch.

Elsewhere ... West Brom have moved to the top of the Championship thanks to a 3-2 win at Preston and the fact Middlesbrough could only draw at Hull.

Here are the full-time scores from the 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League:

Everton 3-0 Fulham

Huddersfield 0-2 Tottenham

Man City 2-0 Brighton

Arsenal 2-0 Watford

Newcastle 0-2 Leicester City

Wolves 2-0 Southampton

FT: Newcastle 0-2 Leicester

Life is a struggle for Newcastle at the moment, who had Mike Ashley watching on as Vardy scored from the spot and Maguire added a second later on to complete the win.

FT: Everton 3-0 Fulham

The main disappointment at Goodison will be for Sigurdsson who missed a penalty but still scored two goals either side of a Tosun strike.

FT: Huddersfield 0-2 Spurs

All quite simply for Spurs thanks to Kane finding the target twice before the break, the second coming from the spot. Huddersfield will be a touch worried with how things are going for them.

FT: Arsenal 2-0 Watford

Another team who did not look like getting three points for quite a while but a bit of luck with Cathcart’s own goal and Ozil’s effort soon earned the victory for Emery’s side.

FT: Wolves 2-0 Southampton

A couple of late goals make the difference for Wolves who struggled to find the inspiration to break down Southampton for a long time. Cavaleiro and Jonny were the men to get their names on the scoresheet in the final 11 minutes.

GOAL! Everton 3-0 Fulham (Sigurdsson, 89)

Bernard slides the ball into the path of Sigurdsson, who calmly slots in the third late on. It could have been a hat-trick for Sigurdsson today if it wasn’t for his missed penalty earlier.

FT: Man City 2-0 Brighton

Manchester City are heading towards going top of the table, thanks to goals from Sterling and Aguero against Brighton, but they might not be there for too long with Liverpool travelling to Chelsea for the 5.30pm kick-off.

Exciting Premier League news ...

GOAL! Arsenal 2-0 Watford (Ozil 83)

There was no doubt who should be credited with there as Ozil doubles the lead for the Gunners. Game over at the Emirates.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Watford (Cathcart og 81)

Against the run of play, Arsenal take the lead! Iwobi crosses to the near post, Lacazette is there but it goes in off Cathcart!

GOAL! Wolves 1-0 Southampton (Cavaleiro 79)

Cavaleiro scores with his first touch! Wolves have been poor this game after a bright start but their two substitutes combine here. Adama Traore crosses for Jimenez who sets Cavaleiro on the edge of the box and the Portuguese fires it past McCarthy.

Success is clean through for Watford! He takes a heavy touch but dinks the ball over Leno … the ball flicks off the outside of the far post and goes wide. Watford so nearly 1-0 up at Arsenal.

Great block from Holding! Watford are looking the more likely to score at Arsenal – Will Hughes has been excellent this second half – and they so nearly take the lead. Isaac Success gets free but sees his shot blocked by Rob Holding.

Updated

GOAL! Newcastle 0-2 Leicester (Maguire 73)

Newcastle are sleepwalking towards defeat here. Simple as you like, Maguire rises above Cieran Clark at a corner and heads the ball into the back of the net.

GOAL! Everton 2-0 Fulham (Tosun 66)

Tosun has come off the bench to plant a brilliant header past Bettinelli at the back post. His first goal in 10 games.

Celtic have taken the lead against Aberdeen!

Scott Sinclair has come off the bench and backheeled Celtic into a crucial lead. Celtic, remember, are six points off the top of the table in the Scottish Premiership.

GOAL! Manchester City 2-0 Brighton (Aguero 65)

What a goal this is! Aguero picks the ball up on the half-way line, ghosts past three Brighton players, plays a beautiful one-two with Sterling as he enters the penalty box and sidefoots a first-time finish past Ryan to double City’s lead. WHAT A GOAL. Aguero has been quiet this afternoon, but was irresistible there.

Substitution for Arsenal: Ramsey off, Iwobi on. The Welshman claps the supporters as he trudges off. He doesn’t appear to be injured.

City are peppering Brighton’s goal. Eight yards out, Aguero has his powerful shot heroically blocked by Duffy, then Matt Ryan palms away another sweet strike David Silva. Still 1-0 to the champions at home.

In the Championship, Millwall went behind to Sheffield United after a Billy Sharpe opener but they’ve turned it around and now lead 2-1. Lee Gregory has put them in front.

Elsewhere, Lewis Grabban has given Nottingham Forest the lead at Blackburn. He missed a penalty in the first half, so that one will feel even sweeter.

Sigurdsson misses a penalty! Everton 0-0 Fulham

The Icelandic midfielder lifts his penalty, it crashes into the crossbar and Fulham clear! The London side will feel justice has been done – it was a soft decision, with Odoi penalised for giving Calvert-Lewin the slightest of pushes.

Great save from Leno! The German saves his compatriot Mustafi’s bacon, after Deeney bulldozed past the defender to connect with a Holebas free-kick. Deeney sidefoots a volley towards the bottom corner, but Leno dives to his right and turns it behind for a corner!

Pochettino has made changes at half-time, Winks has come on for Dembele, who was carrying a knock. Verthonghen also came off, with Wanyama replacing him and Dier slotting back into central defence.

Meanwhile, in Spain, Barcelona are behind to Athletic Bilbao! Óscar de Marcos with the goal.

Penalty shout for Newcastle! Perez goes down after tussling with Maguire but the referee isn’t interested. At least it gets the Toon on their feet.

Peeeeeeep! And we’re back underway with the 3pm kick offs.

Full time in the Rome derby: Roma 3-1 Lazio. Federico Fazio, formerly of Spurs, scored for the Giallorossi to seal the win.

Cech injury has been confirmed as a hamstring strain, so that will be a few weeks out at least. Brilliant opportunity for Leno.

I asked if there was a better penalty taker in the world than Kane, and Oliver points out, via email, that he’s not even the best penalty taker in London.

Harry Kane career penalty record - scored 25, missed six
Mark Noble career penalty record - scored 31, missed four

Half-time in the Championship: notably Ipswich, joint bottom of the table, are 2-0 up at Birmingham and Derby are behind to Bolton after their heroics against Manchester United.

Championship

In Spain, Barcelona are still being held 0-0 by Athletic Bilbao. Just before half-time there, Messi left on the bench, presumably with their trip to Tottenham in mind this coming Wednesday. I wonder if Valverde will bring him on at half time if it stays goalless.

Half-time scores

Everton 0-0 Fulham

Huddersfield 0-2 Tottenham

Man City 1-0 Brighton

Arsenal 0-0 Watford

Newcastle 0-1 Leicester City

Wolves 0-0 Southampton

495 minutes without a home goal now for Huddersfield. That’s a record for a Premier League side going back 20 years.

Nearly a sensational goal for Huddersfield! Durm digs a cross out from the left, and Laurent Depoitre hits it flush on the volley, with the ball cannoning off the underside of the goal. Gazzaniga didn’t move in the Spurs goal. Still 2-0 to Spurs there.

Cech goes down in a heap after taking a goal kick and immediately gestures to the bench that he needs to come off. Not sure exactly what he’s done but limps off, with Bernd Leno coming on to make his Premier League debut.

I like Torreira. On this occasion, he clatters into Doucouré for a foul, but he definitely provides the bite in Arsenal’s midfield that has been sorely missing in recent years.

Fulham hit the bar at Everton! Sessegnon has been the visitors’ biggest threat down the left, and he hits a side-foot shot which crashes off the underside of Pickford’s bar. Luckily for Everton, it stays out.

Arsenal come roaring back. Bellerin does well to reach the byline, but Aubameyang can only air-kick his cross from the right. Xhaka arrives late and flashes a powerful shot that stings Foster’s palm. Say what you like about Xhaka, but that man can kick a football. Similar looking shot to the one he scored for Switzerland in the World Cup.

Massive chance for Watford at Arsenal! A cross comes in from the left, Cech fumbles it, the ball falls to Deeney six yards out but somehow an awkward bounce ends up falling back into the hands of Cech, who was lying helplessly on the floor. Lucky escape for the Gunners.

On the pitch, Newcastle trail Leicester 1-0, off it …

It’s now Roma 2-1 Lazio in the Rome derby. Ciro Immobile had equalised for I Biancocelesti but Kolarov pops up four minutes later to give Roma another lead.

GOAL! Manchester City 1-0 Brighton (Sterling 29)

Classic counter-attacking goal. Aguero finds some space in the middle, releases Sané down the left. The German gets to the byline and flashes it across goal where Sterling is there to tap it in at the back post. City haven’t been at their best but they lead.

Looks like Huddersfield’s Kongolo hurt himself in that challenge with Moura inside the area. The stretcher is on, he looks like he’s going to have to go off.

GOAL! Huddersfield 0-1 Tottenham (Kane 25)

Our first Premier League goal! Moura bursts down the right wing, goes down in the area but gets to his feet, lays it back for Trippier, who knocks a peach of a first-time cross to Kane at the back post and the England striker makes no mistake this time, planting his header low to Lossl’s right.

Somebody stuck a microphone in front of Mourinho again.

Twenty minutes gone, and we’re yet to have a goal though yet in the Premier League, partly because Joselu has squandered another one-on-one. The Spaniard took an age to get the ball under control, and never looked like he had the conviction to finish the chance. In the end, he look too long and Maguire got back for Leicester. Newcastle 0-0 Leicester City there, the home fans are not best pleased with Joselu.

Updated

Lacazette is through! Cathcart makes a mess of his clearance, and the Frenchman pounces. He’s got a clean run at goal, Foster comes out, and Lacazette dinks it over him, but the ball trickles wide! Very similar to the Kane chance a couple of minutes ago, although the chance was missed, not saved.

Derby, who beat Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, are behind at Bolton Wanderers, with Craig Noone getting the goal. Elsewhere in the Championship, Neal Maupay has continued his fine form for Brentford, they are 1-0 up against Reading.

Updated

Still a legend up there.

Massive chance for Harry Kane! From a long clearance at the back, Schindler makes a misjudgement and allows Kane to roll him. The England man is clean through on goal … saved by Lossl! Kane tries to dink him but the Danish keeper stood tall.

As expected, Wolves are all over Southampton at Molineux. It seems like it’s only going to be a matter of time for the home side there.

Penalty shout for Arsenal! Lacazette is tripped in the area, but stays on his feet and doesn’t get the decision. Too honest, if anything Geoff.

Aaron Wilbraham gives Rochdale the lead against Portsmouth in League One. Pompey, remember are yet to lose in nine matches this season.

Alex Pritchard is up against his former club Tottenham today for Huddersfield, who have started lively. No Christian Eriksen today for Spurs, he’s injured.

Peeeeeeep! And we’re underway with our 3pm BST kick offs.

Main focus here will be on the Premier League, but I’ll do my best to keep you updated with the big shakers and movers in the Football League, plus the matches across Europe.

Schalke, who have lost all five league matches so far this season, have taken an early lead against Mainz. Roma, who have also had an underwhelming start to the season, are also 1-0 up in the Rome derby, against Lazio. Half-time there, Lorenzo Pellegrini with the goal.

David Hytner’s match report from West Ham 3-1 Manchester United, for your eyes only.

Tom Davies captains Everton again, as they host Fulham. What are your thoughts on this? Local lad, full of talent, but just 20 years old. Not sure if that says more about Davies being a natural leader, or a general lack of leadership elsewhere in the squad. Seamus Coleman, Phil Jagielka are both out today, and Leighton Baines is on the bench.

Just for kicks, here is Davies skateboarding through Liverpool city centre.

Watford visit the Emirates, then. They’ve slightly stalled with their form, but still looked a threat in their defeats to Manchester United in the league and Tottenham in the cup midweek. I fully expect them to take the game to Arsenal today. Troy Deeney always enjoys it against Arsenal, if you remember.

Here he is setting up a frankly ridiculous goal for Adlène Guedioura in the FA Cup a couple of years ago.

It’s a beautiful day in north London. No idea what this is about, though.

Weird.

As mentioned in this week’s 10 things, Martin Montoya faces up against his former manager Pep Guardiola today with Brighton visiting Manchester City. Technically, he’s an excellent full-back … (watch this from his Barca days)

… but his one weakness is probably pace. Wouldn’t call him slow, but won’t fancy it today against Leroy Sané, who starts his second consecutive league game.

Presumably Zinchenko got the nod today because of this outrageous pass in midweek away at Oxford United. Woof.

Full-time: West Ham 3-1 Manchester United

Anderson, a Lindelof own goal and Arnautovic led the Hammers to victory in East London. It wasn’t even too tricky for them. Another poor performance from United in that ghastly kit means Mourinho has more questions to answer about why things are very much going terribly for him and his men.

As United are losing at West Ham they could end the weekend down in 11th if everything goes against them in the other games. They been pretty ordinary in this game and most of the season. Will Mourinho plough on regardless?

Phil Foden’s performance in midweek against Oxford is not rewarded with a Premier League start but Zinchenko is offered the chance to show what he can do at left-back. Brighton might be a little worried about the prospect of facing the Silvas, Sterling, Sane and Aguero. Could be lively at the Etihad.

So there is all the news from around the Premier League. In Spain Messi has been rested by Valverde for their match against Athletic Bilbao, probably just the Barcelona head coach taking pity on his former team who are still trying to remember what life was life before Ziganda turned them into such a woeful side
