“We played against a brave team, a team that knows how to get points,” says José Mourinho, the Manchester United manager. “It was good to see the way the team fought for it. I thought it was difficult for the referee, but I thought Mike Dean and his team were brilliant, they were really good. We were not brilliant, but we were very good.”

Can they reach Manchester City? “It is a distance where the leaders play without any kind of pressure,” the Portuguese says. “I think the difference of points means players of that experience are too comfortable.”

On Alexis Sánchez: “If you ask me if I think he’s coming I think so but I have no confirmation,” Mourinho says.

“I got chills when I walked out at Goodison for the first time,” Theo Walcott says of his Everton debut. “The second half was a big improvement and the hard work paid off in the end. We want more, I want more – we are not going out to draw games – but it was a good day personally.” Meanwhile, James McCarthy suffered a tibia and fibula double break as a result of that second-half block on Rondon, says manager Sam Allardyce.

Meanwhile, Leicester City soar to seventh, above Burnley, after that 2-0 win over Watford at the King Power Stadium.

Elsewhere, Rotherham have got what is surely the winner against Portsmouth. Joe Mattock has scored one minute into injury time to give Kenny Jackett an unhappy return to the, er, New York Stadium. And heartbreak for Yeovil, who have surrendered what is surely the winning goal to Chesterfield in stoppage-time.

Barcelona have released a clear-the-air kind of statement in the wake of ongoing reports linking them with a certain Antoine Griezmann. Barça “strongly denies the information that has appeared over the course of the last few hours in different media regarding Atlético Madrid player, Antoine Griezmann, and an alleged deal with our club.”

“The name of Samir Nasri came up and I looked him up,” emails Kelvin. “He is at Antalyaspor, a team in the relegation zone in Turkey, and only seems to have played eight games this season. How does such a talented player go from winning the league to not being picked for a relegation-bound team? Sad case.”

Great to see Gazza looking well:

“Is it just me or does Arsenal’s bench look a bit light on attacking options?” asks Jordan Pickering, via Twitter. Not at all, with no Giroud, Sanchez, Walcott or Welbeck today, there feels little scope to change the game. Youngsters Eddie Nketiah and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who can play further forward, are both options off the bench. Those deals for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan cannot come soon enough:

Read Dominic Fifield’s piece from the Amex Stadium:

Paul Lambert speaks before taking charge of his first match as Stoke City manager. “I have changed little things that will hopefully benefit the team,” he says. They host Huddersfield Town this afternoon. New recruit Moritz Bauer starts, as does Charlie Adam. Peter Crouch, meanwhile, has to make do with a place on the bench.

Premier League clubs will mark the death of Cyrille Regis with a minute of applause and the wearing of black armbands at matches this weekend:

Preamble

What a day we have in store; both Arsenal and Manchester United are strapped in for some red-hot 3pm action, against Crystal Palace and Burnley respectively. Then there’s Theo Walcott’s home bow against West Bromwich Albion, plus the small fry of Paul Lambert’s first game in charge of Stoke City and West Ham will be determined to trump Bournemouth after succumbing to Callum Wilson’s hand in that Boxing Day 3-3 thriller. And breathe.

In the Championship, Aston Villa host Barnsley, leaders Wolves entertain Nottingham Forest while Sunderland do battle with Hull – the latter could prove particularly bleak. Plus, we will keep one eye on Atlético Madrid in action against Girona in La Liga and in the Bundesliga, where RB Leipzig travel to Freiburg. Before all of that gets under way, indulge yourself:
