Arsenal urged to replace Mesut Ozil with Real Madrid star this summer

Arsenal have been urged to sign Gareth Bale as a replacement for Mesut Ozil.

The midfielder's future at the Emirates has been in doubt after failing to cement a spot in Unai Emery's starting XI.

Ozil has been linked with a move away from north London but his £350,000 wages may prove to be a stumbling block.

The German has attracted interest from China and Italy and could be offloaded in the summer.

And Paul Merson believes Real Madrid star Bale is a good fit for the Gunners, although they could face competition from Chelsea .

He wrote in his Daily Star column : "I think he suits Arsenal down to the ground as well. If they could get him in and get Mesut Ozil out they’ve had a big result.

"Bale would be brilliant at Chelsea as well but that all depends on their transfer embargo. If it’s delayed could they do some kind of swap with Eden Hazard?

"‘I think Hazard is going to Real Madrid. He would have signed a new contract by now otherwise. But Bale would not be a bad replacement, would he?"

Manchester United have been linked with Bale for several years and Merson added: " Manchester City and Liverpool don’t need him and for them it would be a lot of money to invest in someone of his age and with his injury record.

"But most of the clubs below them would love to take the risk if they could afford the transfer fee and wages.

"Manchester United looks like the best fit for him. They’ve tried to sign him before and it didn’t come off, but he’s always felt like their kind of player.

"They will be on a rebuild next season and there could be lots of ins and outs at Old Trafford. They are also one of the only teams who could afford him."
