Arsenal urged to make big decision as pressure builds on Mikel Arteta after summer spending

Stan Collymore has urged Arsenal to replace Mikel Arteta as Gunners boss with Diego Simeone.

Former England international Collymore believes that under Arteta Arsenal are too nice and need Simeone to bring in a 'spiteful, nasty' side to their game.

Writing in the Mirror, Collymore has said he thinks Arsenal should have replaced Arteta over the summer but seeing as he has been backed in the transfer window he should be given until the end of the year before having his position re-evaluated.

"I’d have shown [Mikel] Arteta the door at the start of the summer and made the change," Collymore said.

"There’s nothing I’ve seen to suggest he’s the real deal.

"As it is, he should be given until the next transfer window. If Arsenal are still nowhere near the top five – and they won’t be – then a serious move should be made for the Atletico Madrid boss."

Arteta has been backed this summer in the transfer market following the recruitment of Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Martin Odegaard, Albert Lokonga and Nuno Tavares at an outlay in the region of £130 million.

Despite this, Collymore is not impressed with the Gunners' recruitment, calling the new players too nice and believing that Arsenal are lacking in 'leaders' and 'elite warriors'.

The Gunners began their league campaign with a 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Brentford and now face a tough couple of matches facing European Champions Chelsea at home this afternoon before a trip to Premier League winners Manchester City.

Collymore is not the only former player with question marks over the Gunners with ex-Spurs and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov also expressing his reservations about Arsenal's chances against Chelsea.

Berbatov told the Metro he expects Chelsea to run out comfortable victors at the Emirates and believes Romelu Lukaku can 'run riot' against Arteta's team.
