Arsenal urged to hire Arsene Wenger as new club chairman

Arsene Wenger should be the man to replace Sir Chips Keswick as Arsenal chairman according to former Gunner Martin Keown.

Keswick retired following 15 years in the role having admitted he was always going to leave his post at the end of the season.

It leaves a vacancy at the Emirates and Keown, who won three league titles and three FA Cups at the club, believes his former boss would be the ideal candidate to step in.

Wenger spent over 20 years in north London and is Arsenal's most successful manager.

But Keown doubts whether a move would materialise, at a time when the club's current owners believe the position to be redundant.

He told talkSPORT : "Sir Chips is somebody who had been there for 15 years, took over from Peter Hill-Wood, so I think the club have been respectful with the work he's done there.

"It would be something special to see Arsene Wenger come onto the board. I don't think so somehow, I think he's said recently he doesn't want to do that, never saw himself as someone who would sit on the board, but they could do a lot worse.

"I feel that would be almost the perfect answer for Kroenke, the young Josh Kroenke, he needs that older person perhaps around, someone with the experience.

"Other people would think that it would be intimidating for [manager Mikel] Arteta - I don't think so.

"If you're a successful-type personality, you don't really mind who else is in the building. You embrace that knowledge that could come in through the door.

"So I would applaud that if Arsenal Football Club were to bring Arsene Wenger onto the board."

The Frenchman left the Gunners in 2018 and has admitted since then when he left the north Londoners he had no intention of returning.

He told beIN Sports: "Would I return to the Emirates Stadium? I always said to myself that I would be leaving Arsenal completely. That's the decision I made."
