Arsenal transfer stunner as Houssem Aouar bid is rivalled by late Real Madrid move

Real Madrid have joined the race to sign Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar in a huge blow for Arsenal.

The Gunners have been chasing him all summer but couldn't agree a fee to sign him and now Madrid have come in to try and take him to to Spain.

Zinedine Zidane is behind the initial contact for the midfielder and L'Equipe say it's likely he'll head to the Spanish capital before Monday's deadline.

And they revealed that Arsenal have come nowhere near the asking price despite courting the talented midfielder all summer.

It's a major blow to Mikel Arteta's plans to turn Arsenal into a title-challenging team at the top of the English Premier League.

The Spaniard has been looking for a playmaker to come in and challenge in his midfield with Mesut Ozil nowhere near the squad and the likes of Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny more defensive.

But it's unlikely that Aouar will be that man now with Lyon set to agree a fee with Madrid over them.

Madrid want a new playmaker after former Chelsea star Eden Hazard suffered yet another injury at the club that will rule him for at least the next month.
