Arsenal transfer rumours: PSV in for William Saliba, Mesut Ozil responds to Tottenham question

The pressure continues to mount on Mikel Arteta, who could only watch his Arsenal side falter to Manchester City in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night.

The disastrous run of Arsenal's recent performances and results only intensifies the need to recruit in the January transfer window.

The talent deficiency in the squad has been made increasingly clear in recent months, and Arteta will turn to the transfer market in an attempt to address the many weaknesses of the current team.

With that in mind, we have updates on those who could leave next month, including a crucial loan and an underwhelming big-money signing.

Here is a round-up of the latest Arsenal transfer rumours.

PSV eye William Saliba loan

William Saliba is expected to leave Arsenal on loan next month after he has endured a frustrating six months without any first-team action.

The French defender arrived in north London following a one-year loan stint with Saint-Etienne with hopes of forging a role for himself in the Arsenal squad. Instead, he was deemed not ready for Premier League action and was not named in either of the Premier League or Europa League squads, meaning he is ineligible to play.

Arteta has expressed his frustration with the situation, with a six-month loan now seeming likely. And football.london understands Dutch side PSV have entered the race to sign Saliba.

Saliba has interest from across Europe, including teams in Germany, France and Spain. Arsenal could also look to loan him to an English club to aid his adaptation with English football.

Pepe must improve or be sold

Nicolas Pepe must improve or be sold, says former Arsenal midfield Emmanuel Frimpong.

Pepe signed with Arsenal in a club-record £72million deal in 2019. He has shown glimpses of his quality at times, but has largely underwhelmed during that time.

And Frimpong believes that the winger must figure things out or be shipped out of the club.

"When I look at Pepe, I don’t see any aggression and determination,” Frimpong told PlayOJO. "When he makes a mistake, he smiles or laughs and for me, I find that frustrating.

"There was a lot of hype about Pepe coming to Arsenal and he’s been very disappointing.

"He’s another player I think needs to step up his game and if he doesn’t, we need to get him out and bring in other players to help push us up the table."

Ozil rejects Spurs

Writing on Twitter, Mesut Ozil says that he would never sign with Tottenham Hotspur, even if Arsenal's north London rivals made an approach for him.

Ozil hosted a Q&A on Twitter on Wednesday night, using the hashtag '#AskMesut'. One fan asked: "Would you leave Arsenal for Tottenham Hotspur if there's a chance?"

Ozil very simply replied with a Spiderman gif holding up a placard with the word, 'No'.

The German midfielder is in the final year of his contract and has not played for the club since before lockdown. He was excluded from the Premier League and Europa League squads, meaning he is ineligible to play until the registration period reopens in January.
