Arsenal transfer rumours: Martin Odegaard deal 'very close', Gunners miss out on wonderkid

Arsenal's search for a creative midfielder goes on as we move into the latter stages of the January transfer window.

The Gunners have endured a bumpy start to the season, struggling to get out of the blocks before putting together a resurgence of late, winning four of their last five Premier League games to climb into mid-table.

Mikel Arteta and Edu are now hoping to compound their recent improvements with the addition of a creative midfielder having offloaded players from the wage bill.

Mesut Ozil - although not officially confirmed - and Sokratis have both left the club during this window, allowing the Gunners to reinvest to improve their midfield, but who could they sign?

Join us below as we round up all the latest transfer rumours.

Odegaard deal 'very close'

Arsenal are said to be 'very close' to pulling off a loan deal for Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard.

Odegaard has requested a loan move from Real Madrid amid a lack of game time, starting just three times in La Liga so far this season, and it was thought he would return to Real Sociedad where he enjoyed an excellent loan spell last season.

But according to Sport, Arsenal are leading the race with Mikel Arteta keen to sign Odegaard as he looks to add a creative midfielder to his ranks during this window.

Odegaard will allow him to do that without breaking the bank, and the Norwegian can join up with fellow Real Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos at the Emirates Stadium.

The deal would be until the end of the season with Real Madrid firmly against any option-to-buy.

Arsenal to miss out on starlet

Arsenal are set to miss out on Fluminese starlet Marcos Paulo.

According to Goal, Atletico Madrid are set to win the race for the talented 19-year-old by offering him a five-year deal.

Paulo's contract is set to expire in the summer and his agent, Lucas Mineiro, is reportedly in Madrid to tie up the deal.

Paulo is a left-winger who has already featured regularly at the senior level despite his youth, making 23 Brazillian Serie A so far this season.

Eriksen swap deal

Inter Milan are reportedly interested in a deal for Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira.

Torreira is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid but there is talk he could be recalled having been used sparingly amid the excellent start Diego Simeone's men have made to the season.

Reports from Tuttosport claim Inter could offer former Spurs midfielder Christian Eriksen to Arsenal in order to secure Torreira, who they think could add something to their midfield.

Eriksen has struggled since his arrival last year and it could be Inter's trump card amid reported interest from Valencia, Fiorentina and Lazio.
