Arsenal transfer rumours: Barcelona wanted Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Dominik Szoboszlai eyed

Already clubs are starting to look ahead to the January transfer window.

Transfer deadline day may have only been on Monday but, with such a quick turnaround between the two windows, clubs are already making plans for three months' time.

With that in mind, here are the latest Arsenal transfer rumours.

Barca wanted Maitland-Niles

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says Barcelona were keen on signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Arsenal stars in England training

The versatile 23-year-old's future was the subject of plenty of speculation over the summer as the Gunners looked to raise funds for new signings.

Wolves were reportedly close to agreeing a deal for Maitland-Niles, whilst Romano says Barca were keen before signing Sergino Dest from Ajax.

Yet Mikel Arteta was key to ensuring the right-back stayed at the Emirates.

Szobsoszlai eyed

Arsenal have identified Dominik Szoboszlai as a potential alternative to Houssem Aouar, according to reports.

The Gunners had a bid rejected for Aouar this summer and it remains to be seen whether they will go back in or can reach an agreement with Lyon in January.

RB Salzburg's Szoboszlai is also reportedly on their list of targets, with the 19-year-old offering a dominant presence in midfield.

Torreira option to buy

Romano also says that Atletico Madrid have the option to buy Lucas Torreira following his loan move from Arsenal.

The midfielder joined Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan as Arsenal tried to free up funds in their wage bill.

Atletico now have until June 2021 to turn Torreira's move permanent for a fee of €21m.
