Arsenal transfer rumours: £40m Mendes battle, Smith Rowe loan decision, Aouar admission

There continues to be plenty of Arsenal transfer news going around in the final days of the domestic window.

Although the majority of the Gunners' transfer activity for the summer is finished, there is still time to do deals with EFL clubs and help some of the fringe players get some experience.

It's a race against time, however, for all involved, with the domestic transfer deadline set at 5pm on Friday, October 16.

The January transfer window may seem a long way away, but in fact it's only in two and a half months' time and already there is talk about some of the deals which might happen.

In light of this, here are the latest Arsenal transfer rumours doing the rounds.

Battle for Mendes

Reports in Italy suggest Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are all interested in signing Nuno Mendes.

The 18-year-old is a left-back who plays for Sporting in Portugal.

He has already played 11 times for the first team at the Lisbon club and is being tracked by clubs across Europe.

Calciomercato say the English trio, plus AC Milan are keeping tabs on him ahead of a potential move.

Mendes has a release clause of just over £40m, however, and his contract in Lisbon runs until 2025 so it could take a big offer for Sporting to part with him.

Smith Rowe to stay?

Young attacking midfielder Emile Smith Rowe could be staying with the Gunners for the foreseeable future.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a loan away from the Emirates with Derby County, Reading and Huddersfield Town all keen on his services.

However, boss Mikel Arteta could keep him around the first-team set-up, according to Goal.

The Spaniard is said to be keen to use Smith-Rowe in the Europa League as he helps to continue the player's development path towards the Arsenal first team.

Aouar happy at Lyon

One player who was strongly linked with a summer switch to Arsenal was Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.

However, a move never materialised for the France international who made his debut last week.

Aouar has been speaking about the failed move and the Gunners' interest on French television and he admits he is more than happy to stay in Ligue 1.

"I'm happy to stay at Lyon," Aouar told TF1.

"It's my city, it's my club. It gives me immense pride to represent Lyon.

"It wasn’t really Arsenal or nothing else, although at the end it was close to that. Really, a choice had to be made and I’m happy to stay here."

Saliba sticking around

French defender William Saliba is another player who is set to stick around at Arsenal for the time being at least.

The centre-back was set to return to former club Saint-Etienne on loan but a move could not be finalised.

There was then talk he would move to a Championship club but The Athletic are reporting last summer's £25m signing is set to stick around at the Emirates until the January transfer window at least.

The teenager is yet to make his competitive debut for the Gunners.
