Arsenal transfer round-up: Gunners willing to drop Pepe's price tag plus Balogun interest

Arsenal are in superb form at the moment, not losing since August to rise from the relegation zone to sixth in the Premier League.

Manager Mikel Arteta will be desperate to keep the team's good form going - but he may need to dip into the transfer market to do so.

The Gunners spent more than £140million during the summer, yet they're expected to lose some players to the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

Ghana's Thomas Partey, Egypt's Mohamed Elneny, Ivory Coast's Nicolas Pepe and Gabon's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are all expected to play in the tournament.

Here, Mirror Football rounds-up the latest Arsenal transfer rumours as Arteta and technical director Edu consider reinforcements.

Arsenal are willing to accept an offer of £25m for record signing Pepe, according to football.london.

The Gunners paid Lille £72m for the 26-year-old in August 2019 and he's shown glimpses of his talent, scoring 15 goals in 67 Premier League games.

None of those goals have come this season, though, and it's believed Arsenal are willing to cash in on him before his contract expires in 2024.

Arteta's reported decision may have something to do with the emergence of Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka, who are now both England internationals.

Discussing Pepe's progress in April, the Arsenal manager said: "He needed a period of adaptation and that is gone now.

"So we cannot rely on adaptation again, now it is about performance and he can do it. He has got the players to support him, a manager that trusts him.

"He has got all the staff that are willing to help him and all the team mates who really like him because he is a really likeable character, so there are no excuses."

Arsenal have been encouraged to sign Donny van de Beek (Getty)

Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell has urged his old club to sign Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The 24-year-old reportedly wants to leave Old Trafford in January after making just four Premier League starts since joining the club in October 2020.

And Campbell believes Arsenal and Van de Beek would be a match made in heaven. "I only want what’s best for Arsenal and I believe Van de Beek can play, if given the opportunity," Campbell told The Highbury Squad.

"The boy can play. He wants out. I think this young man has super ability. He can play anywhere around the midfield – holding, at eight, and he can play attacking."

Campbell also believes the Gunners should go after Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling, who's made been linked with Barcelona.

The England international, 26, has fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad since Jack Grealish's arrival, making just three Premier League starts this term.

"Nobody can argue that his output and return as a wide player," added Campbell. "And he scored over 20 goals as a wide man, that’s huge. If someone like him becomes available we have to be involved. We have to."

The race is on

Championship sides Middlesbrough and Sheffield United are both interested in signing Folarin Balogun, according to The Sun.

The Arsenal striker, 20, is said to be top of new Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder's January transfer shortlist and watched him in action for England U21s.

Balogun scored in that match - a 3-1 victory against Czech Republic - and expressed his desire to play first team football afterwards.

"I feel like I am ready for a new challenge," said the youngster. "I feel like I have played youth football for a while. I have scored goals at that level and improved at that level drastically compared to now.

"At the same time I am not sure what that challenge might be. It might be a loan, or if I am needed at Arsenal I am here and the gaffer knows that as well."

Middlesbrough and Sheff Utd are both in need of more quality up front as the pre-season promotion contenders sit in the bottom half of the table.

"I think it would be fair to say that a lot of the clubs in Europe would be aware of Flo's qualities and if anything he has just got to keep proving it to himself," said England U21 boss Lee Carsley.
