Arsenal transfer plans revealed as board outline instructions to Unai Emery

Arsenal are focusing on efficiency in the transfer market this summer, according to managing director Vinai Venkatesham.

The Gunners finished fifth in the Premier League, but will play in next season's Champions League if they beat Chelsea in the Europa League final on May 29.

But despite the riches that would bring, Venkatesham says the Gunners need to make sure they approach the summer market sensibly.

"We need to continue to look at our wage bill," he told Arsenal’s official website .

"We’ve got, and it’s well known, a large wage bill – that’s a good thing. That demonstrates the financial power and the financial muscle of Arsenal , which is important for us to be successful.

"But we need to make sure we are spending that money as efficiently as possible, and we are spending a lot of time focusing on that.

"Of course we need to be sensible and we need to be efficient in the transfer window. We need to sign excellent players, we need to make sure those players can make a real contribution.

"And if I look back to the last transfer window, with Bernd Leno, Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, Papa Sokratis and others, we think we bring in players that can make a really big impact. And we believe that those players, and many more, can make a bigger impact next season.

Venkatesham and Raul Sanllehi outlined their plans to Arsenal's official website (Arsenal.com)

"We need to be sure that when we are selling players we are maximising the funds that we can get when we sell players, because all of those funds just get reinvested back into the team."

Venkatesham added that ensuring the club aren't stuck with ageing players on long contracts is another priority.

"We need to make sure we are really disciplined," he said.

"A good example of that is senior players that aren’t towards the end of their careers, we need to make sure that those players, when they’ve got two years left on their contract, we’re making the difficult decisions.

"We’re either renewing those players’ contracts, or we’re selling those players.

"So we’re going to have to be brave with those decisions along the way, because we can’t be in a situation where we are allowing players to walk out the door for free unless they are coming towards the end of their career."
