Arsenal transfer news: No surprises if Gunners replace 'erratic' Shkodran Mustafi, says Alan Smith

Arsenal legend Alan Smith claims it would be "no surprise" if Unai Emery decides to sign a new centre-back in the near future.

The Gunners have been in impressive form lately, climbing to fifth in the Premier League table after a run of 11 consecutive wins in all competitions.

However, Emery's side have been leaking goals during that run, conceding 15 goals in their 12 games this season, and have only kept two clean sheets.

Writing in his Standard Sport column, Smith thinks that while fringe players such as Rob Holding have impressed since coming into the side, there are still some weak links in the backline.

"I like the look of Holding," he wrote.

"He has had a run in the side, which has been vital for his development and confidence.

"It can’t be easy playing alongside Shkodran Mustafi in central defence, because the German is very erratic, and it would be no surprise if Arsenal made it their priority to sign a centre-back sooner rather than later."

Arsenal travel to sixth-placed Bournemouth on Sunday and will be without captain Laurent Koscielny and left-back Nacho Monreal.
