Arsenal transfer news: Gunners 'move for Newcastle man' with family club link

Arsenal are one of a cluster of clubs looking at Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, according to the Chronicle Live .

And there is one man on the Gunners staff who will know Woodman more than most.

Woodman, who turned 22 earlier this month, was part of England's Under-20 World Cup winning side in 2017, and played in all three of Newcastle's FA Cup matches this season.

But his contract at the Magpies will expire at the end of next season, and the Chronicle cite him as one of six players who are ready to walk away from Tyneside in the summer.

Arsenal transfer news: Gunners 'make serious approach' for exciting Ligue 1 star

Having enjoyed loan spells at Hartlepool, Crawley, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen, Woodman could now be set for a fresh start elsewhere in the new campaign, after a contract wrangle ensured he didn't get another loan move this season, when he has played second fiddle to No.1 Martin Dubravka.

As well as Arsenal - who will be looking for a replacement for the retiring Petr Cech in the summer - the current England Under-21 goalkeeper has also been linked with moves to Everton , Fulham and Celtic.

But one of the reasons that staff at the Gunners will know his game inside out is that Andy Woodman, Freddie's Dad, is the club's Head of Academy Goalkeeping and Under-23s goalkeeper coach.

Woodman senior - a former goalkeeper who played mostly at Northampton, Brentford and Oxford - has also co-written a book with close friend and former Crystal Palace youth teammate Gareth Southgate, who is Freddie's Godfather.

So if Unai Emery does decide to make a move for the goalkeeper, he'll certainly be able to get some inside information.
