Arsenal transfer decision on Krystian Bielik hammered by former boss

Unai Emery's transfer calls at Arsenal have been questioned by Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer following the decision to sell Krystian Bielik this summer.

The 21-year-old signed for Arsenal in 2015 from Legia Warsaw but failed to break through and instead spent time on loan at the likes of Birmingham City, Walsall and Charlton.

Bielik impressed at Charlton last season on loan but amid an array of injuries ahead of the last January transfer window, Bowyer admits he was surprised Emery didn't recall the young gun.

The discussion reared its head on BBC Radio 5 Live's Friday Night Social as the team were joined by Bowyer, who has guided Charlton to ninth in the Championship so far this season.

After discussing the issues surrounding Arsenal's defence this season, something which has become a pressing matter following the dropping of Granit Xhaka, Bowyer took a brief trip down memory lane to have a pop at Emery and the Gunners.

"They should focus on their centre halves, because that is where they are weak," Bowyer told the BBC.

"It's not like they have got two good ones and a back-up. We had a good lad with us last season called Krystian Bielik.

"They had a couple of injuries and how they didn't recall him in the January and give the kid a chance (I don't know), because he is an exceptional centre half.

"They didn't even take him back and ended up playing midfielders at centre-back. Why are you complicating things? They've always had that problem."

Bielik was subsequently sold to Derby County this summer for around the same value that Arsenal paid Chelsea for David Luiz.
