Arsenal transfer chief Raul Sanllehi told to complete £32m deal for 'reliable goalscorer'

Former Arsenal coach Andries Jonker has urged the Gunners to seal a deal for Wolfsburg star Wout Weghorst.

Arsenal have been linked with the Dutch striker this summer following speculation over Pierre-Emerick Aubemyang's future at the club.

After 20 goals in 42 games this season, Wolfsburg have slapped a £32m price tag on the former AZ Alkmaar target man, who has also been linked with Newcastle if they are successfully taken over this summer.

Speaking to Bild, former Gunners coach Jonker, who has managed Wolfsburg in the past and was at Arsenal from 2015 to 2017, said the striker would fit in well at the Emirates.

He also shot down talk of a move to Newcastle, arguing it would only make sense financially.

"I could imagine Weghorst at Arsenal," he said. "He could help as a worker and a reliable goal scorer.

"It would go well in London.

"Joining Arsenal matters more than many other clubs.

"Weghorst could certainly increase his standing in the Dutch national team.

"A move to Newcastle would certainly only pay off financially."

In the same Bild report, Weghorst himself said a move to Arsenal would be ideal.

Yet the 27-year-old admitted he had heard nothing over any potential transfer.

He said: "That would be nice, wouldn’t it?

"That would be a good thing, of course, that fits in the perfect picture.

"This is a very boring answer, but you shouldn’t be asking me about that. I would say call them up."
