Arsenal transfer budget revealed as Unai Emery faces tough summer in wages fight

Unai Emery will have to budget for his summer rebuilding plans around a purge on Arsenal's wage bill.

Arsenal boss Emery will be afforded around £40million to spend this summer which could go up if they reach the Champions League next season.

But the biggest issue in terms of signings is keeping contracts under control and that may mean they having to sell players in some areas of the squad to keep the wage bill down.

Emery wants a new wide forward player with Bournemouth's Ryan Fraser topping his list of transfer targets in that department and the Scottish winger only has one year left on his contract.

They also want a box-to-box midfielder with Aaron Ramsey on his way out on a free transfer to join Juventus this summer.

Emery is keen to strengthen his leaking defence but that will almost certainly mean shipping out players to make keep the wage bill under control.

The Gunners head to Molineux to face Wolves on Wednesday night with their top four hopes still hanging in the balance.

Emery's side missed a terrific opportunity to jump into third on Sunday, when they were beaten 3-2 at home by Crystal Palace .

German defender Shkodran Mustafi has come in for criticism following his display against the Eagles, but Emery refuses to make him a scapegoat for the potentially damaging Easter Sunday setback.

“I want every player to have confidence. You can take confidence from training, playing and, above all, when we win together or put on a big performance.

“Also, we need our supporters to help us. I know we are the actors and the actor needs to be strong. But I want to protect the players.

"Mustafi is a very good player, a very good centre-back. He can win one, he can win two, he can win three, he can win four – but if he lost one, he is the picture and if we concede a goal, he is the big picture."
