Arsenal training match vs Charlton: Scoreline, Nketiah hat-trick, Sokratis role, players return

Arsenal will be in action when the Premier League returns on Wednesday, June 17 after a three-month break.

Clubs have not played a game since the beginning of March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But the Premier League will return in less than two weeks' time, with Arsenal taking on Manchester City at the Etihad in one of the first matches back.

Ahead of the return of the Premier League, clubs have been allowed to organise friendly matches, to get back up to speed. Those friendlies must be played no more than 90 minutes away, however, with players expected to get there themselves.

James Benge Arsenal Q&A

Arsenal were in action at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with the players snapped arriving already in full kit.

The competition for the Gunners was Championship side Charlton, who themselves are preparing for the return of the second tier season, and of course, being in London, did not have to travel very far for the contest.

Arsenal have yet to reveal any details of the friendly match, but one of the players has offered the tiniest little glimpse of what transpired.

Captain Pierre-Emericko Aubameyang was sat in the stands for some the of game, watching on as his team-mates got back into the swing of things, although it is understood that he did play a part.

And he posted a short clip on his Instagram page, focusing mainly on Bukayo Saka warming up down the wing on the far side from where he was sat.

But that clip of Saka obviously showed some of the friendly action on the pitch too. And it got some Arsenal fans talking.

Dan Critchlow posted the clip on his Twitter page, with some fans on Twitter noticing from it, that Sokratis Papastathopoulos, normally a centre-back, taking up a position at right-back.

Does that hint at a continued positional change for the Greek? Or was it just a necessity of the moment for head coach Mikel Arteta?

Sokratis has played there on a number of occasions this season, before the coronavirus crisis called a halt to the campaign, but his preferred role is at centre-back and Arsenal fans, and probably Arteta too, will be hoping Hector Bellerin can make the position his own when football does return.

The clip also showed that Rob Holding, Sead Kolasinac and Pablo Mari were all also in action.

It was also reported by Arsenal fan Joe Mardon on Twitter that the Gunners won the game 6-0, with Eddie Nketiah scoring a hat-trick and Alexandre Lacazette, Aubameyang and Joe Willock also on the scoresheet.
