Arsenal told to sack Unai Emery and appoint Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has insisted it is time for Unai Emery to go and believe the club must appoint a strong leader like Steven Gerrard.

The Gunners boss is under extreme pressure to keep his job at the Emirates after a disappointing start to the Premier League season.

Saturday's defeat to Leicester City has left them trailing the top four by eight points after only 12 matches.

Having seen over £100m invested into his squad over the summer on the likes of Nicolas Pepe, David Luiz and Kieran Tierney, many expected Arsenal to improve on last season's fifth-place finish and secure Champions League football this term.

However, the impressive form of Leicester and Chelsea, combined with Arsenal's poor performances, have left many feeling that the Europa League will once again be their best route back into Europe's elite club competition.

With that in mind, former Arsenal title winner Petit has insisted it's time for Emery to be sacked and replaced with "a great leader", such as Liverpool legend Gerrard.

"The club needs a great leader now,” Petit told Paddy Power.

"Someone who can bring back the passion, someone respected by the players, someone who can fill the team with energy and the winning mentality.

"Steven Gerrard, for example, is like this.

"I want to see passion, emotion. Someone who, when he takes your hand, you can feel the electricity.

"I want someone who can bring that to the Arsenal dressing room because they need to wake up."

The Frenchman thinks that the majority of the Arsenal squad have already "given up on Emery" and that a change in the dugout is a necessity for the club to start moving in the right direction.

"I believe it’s time for Unai Emery to leave Arsenal,” Petit added.

"The results are not good at all. I don’t recognise this team anymore and I don’t recognise this club anymore.

Unai Emery believes he can recover from criticism

"Arsene Wenger built this club for 20 years and there was concern as generation after generation came and went. But now they look like an average team without any inspiration or creativity – and I don’t think that’s solely down to the players.

"My opinion is that most of the players have given up on Emery, so it’s time for him to go."
