Arsenal told to rethink Joe Willock's transfer to Newcastle United

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell believes the Gunners are making a mistake in selling Joe Willock to Newcastle.

The two clubs have reportedly agreed a deal for the 21-year-old midfielder who shone on loan at the Magpies last season.

Newcastle are yet to agree personal terms with the midfielder, but manager Steve Bruce is hoping to get the deal over the line before the opening game of the season against West Ham.

Willock has been United' 'main target' throughout the summer after impressing on loan last season. The midfielder equalled Alan Shearer's Newcastle record - scoring in the seventh successive game as the Magpies saw off Fulham on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign.

Transfer negotiations between the Gunners and Newcastle have rumbled on all summer, but former striker Campbell believes his old side could do with Willock in the future.

He told Football Insider: "Arsenal aren’t blessed with a lot of midfielders.

"Especially midfielders who can put the ball away. Willock had an incredible purple patch last season.

"He scored last Sunday [v Chelsea] but the goal wasn’t given. He showed again how he has that knack for arriving late into the box.

"I think they need him but if it wasn’t to happen maybe a loan is the best move.

"He’s only young, if he went on loan for a season and came back he’ll be 22 and that’s a great age."
