Arsenal told to reconsider Bernd Leno transfer stance amid Aaron Ramsdale links

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has appealed to the club not to sell Bernd Leno amid links to Aaron Ramsdale.

The goalkeeping position remains highly uncertain at the Emirates Stadium ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Former loanee Mat Ryan has departed the club whilst regular number one Bernd Leno has been linked with a move away. football.london understands that the former Bayer Leverkusen shot stopper is open to a new challenge and that Arsenal could be willing to sell.

This has led to the club attempting to bolster their options in the transfer window. Andre Onana was talked up as an option but football.london understands that Mikel Arteta is now exploring more home grown targets.

One of those names has been revealed as Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale.

Despite suffering relegation with the Blades, Seaman is aware of the Englishman’s quality but has urged Arsenal for that not to be a determining factor in the future of Leno, who he insists should remain in North London.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “I’d be disappointed if Leno leaves. I’m asking myself: ‘Why’s he going?’

“He’s been there a long time and been pretty consistent. Do I think Ramsdale would be good? Yeah, he’s a quality goalkeeper – he’s in the England frame – but I’d want both of them there.

“I was very disappointed when [Emi] Martinez went as we need two quality goalkeepers at the club to test each other.

“They let him go and there was no real pressure on him [Leno]. Getting other goalkeepers is good but if that’s at the price of a top international goalkeeper, I’m not too sure.”

Leno joined Arsenal in 2018 from Leverkusen and has gone on to make 117 appearances for the north London club, winning one FA Cup.

He still has two years left to run on his contract at the Emirates Stadium.
