Arsenal told to make £50m transfer decision amid battle with Manchester United and Tottenham

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has sent a transfer message ahead of the January window.

The Gunners are reportedly set to battle the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham for the signature of Dayot Upamecano.

The 21-year-old central defender has come on leaps and bounds for RB Leipzig since moving from Red Bull Salzburg in 2017.

Upamecano is courting interest from Arsenal and Spurs ahead of the January window, while the defender's agent has also suggested that United may make a play for his services after a long-standing interest in the player.

What to expect from Arsenal in the January transfer window

The France under-21s international is said to have a valuation of £50 million and whilst to some that might seem extortionate, Campbell insists that the Gunners must make the move.

Asked if Upamecano's valuation should deter Arsenal, Campbell, who was speaking on behalf of GentingBet, told football.london: "That would be money well spent. He is a very good player. He is strong and imposing. He is everything that Arsenal aren't at the moment.

"Mikel Arteta knows that he needs quality players at the back there. He needs to sign players who he can grow with, I think that is one of the keys.

"David Luiz and Sokratis for instance are the wrong age if we're honest. You really need centre-backs in your team who can be consistent and are able to grow.

"Upamecano is definitely that type of player. He is quick and strong and he can defend. Good players are hard to find, especially good defenders who can do it all.

"When you consider that you could spend £50m and he may be worth £100m two seasons later, it would be worth getting him now whilst he is cheap."
