Arsenal told the surprising candidate who could improve the team if Mikel Arteta is sacked

Tony Cascarino has claimed that Sam Allardyce would do a better job at Arsenal than current Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

With Arsenal sat bottom of the table without a goal or a point to their name after three matches Cascarino has questioned the job the Spaniard is doing at The Emirates.

Arteta has been backed in the transfer market by Gunners technical director Edu to the tune of £156million over the summer transfer market yet Arsenal have made a disastrous start to the campaign.

After spending so heavily and bringing in a number of defenders, Cascarino believes Allardyce would improve the Gunners defence and get the team back on track.

"If you look at what he did to West Brom, I know they went down, but he certainly made them far better defensively," Cascarino told talkSPORT

"He’d make Arsenal way better. I know some Arsenal fans don’t care about that, they want their teams to have flair, but I think Sam would undoubtedly do a better job than Arteta is doing at the moment."

Allardyce's last job was at West Bromwich Albion where the former England boss was unable to keep the Baggies up. However under his stewardship results, and the defence in particular, dramatically improved.

With Arsenal having conceded nine goals in three matches there is plenty of work for Arteta to do on the backline.

The Gunners have added six players to their squad over the summer with Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu coming into strengthening the defence.

White has made just one league appearance so far for the Gunners, during the opening day loss to Brentford, and Tomiyasu only joined on deadline day meaning Arteta's backline could soon have a very different look to it.

Following the international break, the Gunners get back into Premier League action against Norwich City with the Canaries also sat on zero points from three matches.
