Arsenal make announcement that affects Emi Buendia and Julian Brandt transfers

Arsenal have announced the exit of goalkeeper Matt Macey.

The January transfer window has been open for a week now and the Gunners are continuing to trim down the numbers of their first-team squad.

Sead Kolasinac has rejoined Schalke on loan, while William Saliba is spending the remainder of the season back in France with Ligue 1 side Nice.

And there is set to be more exits from the Emirates Stadium before the window closes, with Mesut Ozil and Sokratis - not registered in the Premier League or Europa League squads - both linked with moves away.

As expected, Macey has become the third player to leave Arsenal this month as his move to Scottish side Hiberninan was officially confirmed on Friday morning.

"Goalkeeper Matt Macey has joined Scottish Premiership side Hibernian," a statement on Arsenal.com reads. "The 26-year-old joined us in October 2013 from Bristol Rovers, where he had been involved in their first-team squad at the age of 17.

"During his career with us, Matt made two first-team appearances, both in the 2017/18 season. The first was in a 2-1 win over Norwich City in the EFL Cup, before the second came in a 0-0 home draw against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League.

"During the past two seasons, Matt has been a regular in the first-team matchday squad. After last season's restart and following Bernd Leno's injury, he was on the bench for every Premier League and Emirates FA Cup match, collecting a winners' medal as part of the matchday squad for the final win over Chelsea at Wembley in August.

"From everyone at Arsenal, we would like to thank Matt for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the next chapter in his career with Hibernian."

Macey's confirmed exit could affect Arsenal's recruitment plans for the remainder of the January transfer window.

With Arteta and technical director Edu both in agreement that a creative midfielder should be the Gunners' priority this month, a number of attacking midfielders have been linked.

football.london understands that Norwich City's Emi Buendia is high up on Arsenal's list of targets, but the club are yet to make a formal approach in regards to looking to secure a deal for his signature.

Meanwhile, interest in Borussia Dortmund's Julian Brandt is genuine and Arsenal are sounding out the possibility of getting a permanent deal done this month, with the Bundesliga giants setting a €25million (£22m) price tag for the 24-year-old who would be willing to join the Gunners this month.

With that said, the idea of both players joining Arsenal before the window closes hinges on the club freeing up another homegrown slot in their 25-man Premier League squad.

At present, there's one slot available following Kolasinac's exit, and Macey leaving doesn't open up another spot as he is one of the five homegrown players included in the squad.

Therefore, Arteta and Edu may have to choose between Buendia or Brandt unless they're able to sell another non-homegrown player.
