Arsenal to 'hold agent talks' as transfer interest in Basel defender steps up

Arsenal boss Unai Emery continues to look to strengthen his defence this summer.

Kieran Tierney is the Spaniard's No.1 target, with talks with Celtic ongoing over a switch for the Scotland international left-back.

But the Gunners boss, who is working on a budget, is also working with club chiefs for a new centre-back.

Arsenal's budget could be bolstered should a buyer be found for Shkodran Mustafi, the German who Emery has reportedly decided can be sold this summer.

But without a landing spot for the ex-Valencia man, Emery is having to work smart.

Young Saint-Etienne starlet William Saliba, a France Under-20 international, is a target who could cost in excess of £20million.

However, the Ligue 1 side are desperate to keep him for the 2019-20 season on loan, while Spurs are also interested, meaning a switch is far from guaranteed.

The Gunners have watched and been impressed by Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou at the Under-20 World Cup.

And he could be available this summer after BVB completed a big-money deal to take Mats Hummels back to the Westfalenstadion from Bayern Munich.

Now another target emerging is Basel defender Eray Comert, the Switzerland Under-21 international.

Comert, 21, is currently in Munich with Basel as they begin pre-season.

According to the Daily Mail, Gunners representatives will meet with his agents in Switzerland at the weekend, for talks over a switch worth in the region of £7million.

Comert, who made 31 appearances for Basel last term, is contracted with the Swiss club - from whom Arsenal signed Mohamed Elneny - until 2022.
