Arsenal 'to announce new long-term Bukayo Saka contract this week'

Arsenal will reportedly confirm a new, long-term contract for youngster Bukayo Saka this week.

The 18-year-old has been one of the Gunners' stand-out performers this season, playing 33 times in all competitions.

With his contract ticking down, boss Mikel Arteta was desperate to secure the services of Saka and the club are putting the finishing touches to the deal before an imminent announcement, report The Athletic.

The news will come as a timely boost to Arteta whose side have won the last two games after an initially difficult restart, losing at Manchester City and Brighton.

Arteta is also having to manage the uncertainty surrounding the future of top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is out of contract next summer.

Barcelona and Inter Milan are interested in the Gabonese hitman, and the Gunners will be reluctant to lose him for free in 12 months' time.

On Saka, Arteta had said he was confident an agreement on an extension of terms would be reached.

“I am so excited with the young players we have," he said. "They just need the right environment around them to explode and Bukayo is doing that, even in difficult circumstances.

“The player and the family knows how much trust I have in him and he is showing every week that his consistency levels are getting better and better.

“I am very positive that everything is going to be done with Bukayo very shortly. The communication between the club, the agents and the family has been going on for months. It is very fluent.”

After Arsenal's win over Southampton, Arteta added: "It's in his hands. He has a manager who has total belief in him, a club that really supports him and team-mates that adore him for who he is.

“He’s such a nice boy, he’s very intelligent and he’s so willing to learn.”
