Arsenal to admit defeat in bid to strengthen squad before transfer deadline

Arsenal appear to have run out of time to bring in new faces - but could still be ready to offload more players.

Out-of-favour Matteo Guendouzi is still set to go as Arsenal are willing to loan him out as he does not feature in Mikel Arteta's first team plans.

Hertha Berlin are the latest club to enquire about a loan for the France under-21 international ahead of Monday's deadline.

Lucas Torreira is heading to Atletico Madrid as Arsenal try to balance the books with Sead Kolasinac also in talks with Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Arsenal have missed out on Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar and Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey has a £45m buy out clause and looks to be staying put.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been interested in Chelsea midfielder Jorginho but, after scoring twice on Saturday, that pursuit also looks over.

Chelsea do not want to let him go without bringing another player in and they have run out of time on Declan Rice while Jorginho moving to the Emirates would also strengthen a rival.

Arteta though has underlined his confidence in the club's hierarchy to bring in new faces to bolster their squad.

He said: "Well, I am very confident in what we are trying to do internally.

"[I am getting] clarity and support from everybody at the club to try and improve the team if we can.

"But most importantly as well, to get the right balance in the squad, for now and the way we want to evolve the squad in the future."

The Gunners have seen Willian arrive on a free this summer while they also signed Gabriel from Lille.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's decision to sign a new deal was also a major coup as they target the Champions League places.
